Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama annual She & Me Campout is always one of my favorite events. To all of the moms, grandmas, aunts and other ladies- thank you for setting the example and helping these girls and young ladies become strong and confident young women. We always enjoy sharing our "creature teachers" as the close out to the weekend. Owlbert decided this was the appropriate time to cast a huge pellet into my hand. 😆

While Hurricane Isaias is pounding the Florida/Alabama coast, we are expecting a lot of wind and rain late this evening and into Saturday morning. I have a bunch of cranky birds but at least I know they are dry and safe. Thank you to Allison Anderson for helping crate everyone and getting them moved.

Sending prayers for friends and family that are hunkering down as the storm moves in.

We are helping to close out the 38th Annual Native American Festival at Moundville Archaeological Park and Museum. This year’s theme is crawfish so we’re sharing details about Alabama’s amazing biodiversity including the nearly 100 different crawfish species that call Alabama home! And of course we love sharing our amazing “creature teachers”!

The weather certainly cooperated today! Temps were much cooler due to cloud cover most of the day. We were at Horseshoe Bend today for the Tallapoosa County Field Day. Elementary students visited 8 stations to learn about soil quality, forestry, water quality, wildlife biology and conservation, cultural resources, agriculture and food safety and of course, raptors. Alley (great horned owl), Reba (red tailed hawk) and Garfunkel (barred owl) were definitely popular with the kids and teachers alike!

Sunday Owlbert’s favorite vet techs came to visit. Anna assisted Dr. Oster during Owlbert’s first wellness exam and beak trim a few weeks ago and was excited to visit and meet the rest of the crew. Lauren finally got to meet the newest “creature teachers” (and was so kind to clean all of the enclosures- thanks so much!) 🧹🧽💦 We also let Thistle and d’Artagnan have a little “meet-and-greet”. Anna with GHOW- Alley and Lauren with EASO- Thistle.

I have the best husband! He found a downed tree that had a hollow section. I told him I wanted to make a screech owl hideout out of it. Thistle gave his stamp of approval.

Last week we had lunch with the local chapter of “Alabama Power Energizers”. I learned that the Energizers are a group of retired Alabama Power employees that continue to share their time and talents with their local communities. They donate thousands of hours of community service to a variety of non-profit organizations. It was a pleasure to meet them and hear about all of the ways they give back to others

Alley, our great horned owl, Odin, the barred owl and our two “tiny but mighty” screech owls, Thistle and d’Artagnan were the after lunch “Environmental Educators” as we talked about their different habitats and why owls are a critical part of our ecosystems.

Thank you to the Alabama Power Energizers for inviting us to join you for lunch!
