09/01/2026 1:45 p.m. Communication Outage
As a result of a fiber line being cut, a widespread internet and telephone outage is affecting Northeastern NC, including our area.

Telephone and internet services at most Chowan County Offices are currently non-operational. This includes the administrative offices of the Chowan County Sheriffs Office.

If you experience an emergency, please call 911 immediately. For non-emergency but immediate issues, please contact Chowan Central Dispatch at 252-482-4444.

Staff email services are highly limited during the outage.

The Chowan County Board of Commissioners adopted its FY26/27 budget on the evening of June 30, 2026. The adopted budget is based on the 2026 Schedule of Values with a tax rate of .5725 cents. State law requires all counties to adopt a balanced budget by the statutory deadline of June 30, 2026.

On Wednesday, July 1, 2026, both chambers of the General Assembly passed the Senate Bill 474 which places Chowan County back into a Property Tax Reappraisal Moratorium (SB 474 and 889) from which the County was previously exempted from. Governor Stein has 10 days to sign the bill into law, veto it, or take no action. If SB 474 becomes law, Chowan County will be required to amend the 2026/27 budget to reflect the 2022 schedule of values with a tax rate necessary to balance the budget.

We understand that there will be many questions from the public and because of this, we have prepared a FAQ sheet to answer many questions that we have received. The FAQ is attached and will be posted online.

At this time no action needed.

We hope this FAQ will provide answers to the public on the budget currently in place based on the current law. If the state law changes, Chowan County will provide updated information regarding any amendments to the budget, tax rate or property bills.

The Perquimans/Chowan/Gates (PCG) Transfer Station will remain CLOSED for residential and C&D waste. They will continue to

The County Commissioner meeting scheduled for tonight (Monday) has been postponed to Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at 6pm.

**Chowan Convenience Sites Closing Early today
Convenience Sites Will be closed at 1pm today, March 16th.

***Chowan County Offices will be closing at 2pm today, Monday, March 16, 2026.

5pm Update on At Large Dog - Captured

The dog is now back in the custody of the Tri-County Animal Shelter. Chowan County, Chowan Animal Control and the Tri-County Animal Shelter would like to thank the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office as well as Gates County and Perquimans County Animal Control for their assistance today.
