Edgerton Trimble Fire Protection District We are a 100% Volunteer and tax supported Fire District Servicing 62 square miles in parts of rural Platte, Clinton, and Buchanan counties in Missouri.

Just after 10pm SAFD responded to a reported structure fire in the 15700 block of North Chestnut Street. The homeowner reported that the house had been struck by lightning and stated there was a fire in the basement. Firefighters found a fire in the basement utility room which had spread through void spaces to the main floor. There were no injuries, and the American Red Cross is assisting the family. SAFD was assisted at the scene by the Edgerton Trimble Fire Protection District, Kearney Fire & Rescue Protection District, NRAD EMS, and Smithville Police Department.

05/09/2026

After a long time coming, this morning the Fire Board officially approved a policy to implement pay-per-response for our fire district.

To many, this may not seem like a major milestone, but for those who answer the call day and night, it represents something much bigger — appreciation for the sacrifices made by our firefighters and first responders. The missed holidays, sleepless nights, time away from family, and the stress that comes with serving our community are things that often go unseen.

While no amount of money can truly repay the dedication and commitment of the men and women who serve, this is a meaningful step toward recognizing the hard work and personal sacrifice that comes with protecting others in their time of need.

I could not be more proud of the men and women I have the honor of serving alongside every day. Their dedication, professionalism, and heart for this community continue to make our department stronger.

It is my hope that this program not only helps recognize our current members, but also encourages others to step forward and join us in serving our community. Together, we will continue building a stronger and better fire department for the future.

Thank you to our Fire Board for their support, and thank you to every firefighter who continues to answer the call.

It is with heavy hearts that we remember our friend Billy Hurt.

Billy was a retired firefighter from Columbia, Missouri, and after retirement he continued serving the fire service through his work with Alex Air. Our department purchased our extrication tools from Billy, and he came to our station several times to train our firefighters.

Anyone who ever trained with Billy knows there was no one quite like him. He always had a smile on his face and, like everyone says, he usually showed up in flip flops ready to get to work. Billy had a true passion for teaching and for the fire service. He would work with firefighters until they felt confident and comfortable with the tools, always patient and always willing to share his knowledge.

He never expected anything in return — he simply wanted firefighters to be better prepared to help people on their worst day.

Many times we told others, “If you want to learn good extrication, get ahold of Billy.”

Billy made a lasting impact on our department and on the firefighters he trained. His knowledge, dedication, and friendship will not be forgotten.

Billy will truly be missed.

Rest easy, Billy.
