💜 You are seen. You are heard. You are not alone.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to stand with survivors, honor those whose lives have been lost, and remind our community that everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home and relationships.

Domestic violence isn’t always physical. It can include emotional abuse, threats, intimidation, financial control, and isolation. Sometimes the signs aren’t visible, but the impact is very real.

At the Edmonds Police Department, we want our community to know that help is available, support matters, and no one should have to face abuse alone.

💜 To survivors: You deserve safety, dignity, and respect.

💜 To friends and family: Listen without judgment. Believe, support, and help connect loved ones with resources.

💜 To our community: Awareness is important, but compassion and action can make a difference.

Need help or know someone who does?

IMPORTANT WARNING ABOUT CURRENT PHONE & ONLINE SCAMS TARGETING SENIORS AND OTHERS IN THE EDMONDS COMMUNITY
(Edmonds - WA)

Edmonds Police are seeing a rise in sophisticated scams in which suspects impersonate law enforcement, government officials, or bank representatives. These scams often target seniors and can cause significant financial loss. We are asking the public to share this information with parents, grandparents, relatives, and neighbors—especially those who may be more vulnerable to fraud. While detectives often investigate these cases further, recovering victims’ money or arresting a suspect is never guaranteed. When in doubt, do nothing! Disconnect and call a trusted family member or 911.

How the Scam Commonly Works (Frequent M.O.):
Victims may click a link in an email, pop-up window, or text message, or receive a direct phone call from someone pretending to be an authority figure. DO NOT CLICK LINKS!
Suspects falsely claim the victim is connected to a major criminal investigation and risk being arrested, often mentioning crimes such as child exploitation, human trafficking, or drug trafficking.
Victims are told their phones are “bugged,” and that bank employees cannot be trusted because they are supposedly involved in the investigation.
Suspects demand secrecy. Victims are instructed not to speak to anyone for “investigation integrity” and may be kept on the phone for hours.

What Victims Are Commonly Told to Do:
Wire money in one or more transfers,
Purchase large amounts of gift cards and provide the card numbers,
Buy Bitcoin by depositing cash into a walk-up Bitcoin ATM,
Place cash or valuables in a secure envelope or package, then provide it to a “courier” at various locations.
Important Reminders from Edmonds Police:
Never call a phone number provided by a link! Call 911 or the number on the back of your bank card
Law enforcement will never demand money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.
You will never be asked to keep an investigation secret from family, friends, or your bank.
If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and contact your local law enforcement agency.

Edmonds Police ask that you take a moment to share this message with seniors, relatives, and members of your community. Increasing education and awareness is one of the most effective ways to prevent community members from becoming victims.
If you believe you or someone you know has been targeted, please report it immediately.

Edmonds PD is investigating several instances of a sophisticated scam that has victimized people in our community. Please share and educate your friends and loved ones, especially seniors! When in doubt, DON'T, and call 911!

• The victim is electronically notified (email, pop-up on a computer, etc.) that their identity has been stolen, their bank accounts have been compromised, and their information is being used for illegal activity such as child p**n, gun trafficking, and activity on the dark web.
• The email or pop-up includes a phone number the victim can call to fix the issue.
• The person on the other end usually says they are with Microsoft, and the victim gets passed around to other callers but always ends up talking to someone claiming they are an agent from the FTC.
• The victim is instructed to remove cash, usually in very large amounts, from their bank accounts.
• The victim is then instructed to package the cash exactly as the suspect wants and send pictures of the cash and the package to the suspect.
• The suspect then instructs the victim to meet another “agent” in a public place (usually a busy parking lot) and hand over the cash. In some instances, the victim is given a “code word” to say to the “agent” picking up the cash to make sure they are talking to the correct person.
• Suspects tell victims their cash will be safe and held in a vault until the investigation is over. Some suspects have even told the victims they would get interest.
• The victims are instructed not to tell anyone what is going on, including family, because it would implicate their family in the FTC investigation.
• The suspects continue this pattern until the victims catch on to the scam, often after multiple transactions and significant losses.

This is an ongoing community conversation, and we want everyone to be educated, legal, and SAFE! Our goal is voluntary compliance with the law! Parents, please talk with your children about how to navigate roads and sidewalks lawfully, safely, and respectfully. License requirements, endorsements, and roadway rules apply, including lane-travel violations and negligent or reckless driving. If necessary, our officers will enforce violations and, when appropriate, impound devices the State of WA defines as a "motor vehicle." Failing to stop for law enforcement when signaled is a criminal offense, and if done on a motor vehicle, it can be a misdemeanor under RCW 46.61.022 or a felony under RCW 46.61.024. Help us prevent unnecessary injuries to all!

In case you were wondering red lights are not STOPTIONAL. The City of Edmonds has red light cameras at multiple intersections. Please make sure to come to a complete stop at all red lights. The few seconds lost by stopping may just save you or others from an accident or injury.
