Two of the newest additions to the Edwardsville Fire Department family have officially graduated from the SWIC Fire Science Fire Academy. Congratulations to probationary Firefighters Jacob DuRocher and Jacob Milton!
As they join our firefighting family, we also want to give a shoutout to their families, who were able to share in that happy ceremony! (That includes proud dad and Edwardsville Captain Brett Milton!)
We'll also offer an extra congratulations to Jacob Milton for receiving the "Firemanship" award from the fire academy instructors.
Welcome aboard!

Saturday's open house was fantastic -- and that's because we got to visit with so many amazing people! As you probably imagine, emergency calls are typically not the time or situation to chat with the community, answer questions and educate about the job we do.
But the open house? THAT'S the perfect opportunity! We hope you enjoyed talking to us, seeing (and trying on!) our gear, sitting inside our emergency vehicles and watching safety demonstrations. We are proud of what we do and so happy to serve this community. But having the public come to see us in our "house" is a wonderful and positive change of pace from when we are called to come to yours!
Special thanks to the Office of the State Fire Marshal (and Special Agent Chris Guile and Loki) and the SAR K9 CO-OP, INC. for bringing your staff and search-and-rescue team.
Stay safe and keep alert for future opportunities to visit with us,take our CPR challenge or learn about other ways to avoid fire and health risks! We can't wait until next fall when the Edwardsville Police and Fire Departments host the next open house events.

OPEN HOUSE REMINDER: Make plans to visit us on Saturday for our annual open house! We'll have some great demonstrations, opportunities to see our vehicles and equipment up close and we'll share lots of smart safety tips. (We'd always prefer for you to come see us rather than us having to visit you, if you know what we mean!) Be sure to take our CPR compressions-only challenge, too!
You definitely want to stop in to see our newest fire engine! We picked it up on Friday just for the open house. It's not ready for service just yet, but should be soon; we have to return it next week for a bit of additional preparation. It's a demo model fire engine that we ordered more than a year ago -- it can take a LONG time from when you order a vehicle to when you receive it.
We'll give you a peek at the truck now, but be sure to visit us on Saturday to see it in person!

E-bikes, scooters, power tools -- you love 'em and you've got plenty of them! And that's great, but here's the thing: Those larger items have larger batteries that store more energy. If the battery fails, a fire can ignite and grow QUICKLY. Here's the answer: Charge those large-battery items OUTSIDE whenever possible. πŸ”Œ
We're wrapping up Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10) with that important tip courtesy of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). πŸ”₯ We've got lots more tips to share, but you'll have to come to our annual open house to hear them!
⏰ We hope you'll join us from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, October 10, at our Public Safety Building, 333 S. Main Street.
πŸ˜€ The open house is a family-friendly event offering a fun day of tours, equipment and vehicle displays, demonstrations, children's activities, Sparky the fire dog, refreshments and more. Take our CPR challenge and learn how to administer hands-only CPR!
πŸš’ It's a great chance to meet members of our public safety team, learn about their work and see the tools they rely on every day. Please join us (and be sure to visit our colleagues next door from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Edwardsville Police Department for their open house, too)!

Battery safety is probably not something you're thinking about most days. But it's important because many fires can be directly linked to battery issues. πŸ”₯ That's why safe charging tips are the focus of Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10)!
Today's tip is aimed at all of you who keep your device connected to the charger even though it's at 100%. Leaving a device plugged in can increase heat and stress on the battery, so be sure to unplug it when it's charged. πŸ”Œ
This week's safety tips are from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and are smart reminders as we lead up to our annual Edwardsville Fire Department Open House! πŸ”₯

Does your phone (or other device) feel especially hot? STOP USING IT. If it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds, that's NOT NORMAL. It's likely an indicator of a damaged battery that could then start a fire.

Soft surfaces like couches, pillows and beds are NOT the place to charge a phone or other device. πŸ”Œ Why? They trap heat and block air flow; that's a risky combination considering devices that are being charged are already creating some heat. Instead, charge your device on a desk, bare floor or other hard, flat surface.

How many devices do you own that require charging? We bet it's quite a few! Charging your devices in the wrong way can be VERY risky, which is why Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10) is focused on tips to do so safely. πŸ”₯ Thanks to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for serving up these great safety reminders! We'll share a tip a day as we lead up to our annual Edwardsville Fire Department Open House, happening SATURDAY, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at our Public Safety Building, 333 S. Main Street.
βœ… TODAY'S TIP: Don't use cheap or incompatible chargers! πŸ”Œ Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. The cheapest chargers may not meet important safety standards!
