🚒 Investing in Fire Prevention Through Education! 🔥

On Saturday, October 10, the Effingham Fire Department was proud to host the Introduction to Fire Inspections course presented by the Illinois Fire Inspectors Association (IFIA).

We welcomed firefighters and fire prevention professionals from across Illinois for a great day of training focused on fire inspections, code enforcement, and fire prevention.

A special thank you to Bob Morris and Dan Riordan for developing and teaching an excellent class! We appreciate their knowledge, experience, and dedication to advancing fire prevention education.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to the IFIA for bringing this valuable training opportunity to Effingham!

🚒 Monday Night Training at Effingham Fire Department! 🚒

A big THANK YOU to Servpro Team Wolfe of Effingham for generously providing dinner for our firefighters during Monday night training! We truly appreciate your continued support of our department and the men and women who serve our community!

We would also like to thank Jerod Sarver with Pals Electric for taking the time to visit with our crews and provide valuable training on solar panel systems, the hazards they present during fires, and important safety considerations for firefighters responding to these incidents.

As solar panels become more common throughout our community, understanding these systems and how to safely operate around them is an important part of keeping our firefighters safe and prepared.

We are fortunate to have local businesses and professionals willing to invest their time and resources into helping our department.

Thank you to SERVPRO of Effingham and Pals Electric for supporting the Effingham Fire Department! 🚒🔥

🚒 Professional Development & Leadership

The Effingham Fire Department is proud to recognize Fire Chief Brant Yochum for earning three nationally recognized professional credentials in 2026:

🔹 Chief Fire Officer (CFO) – Commission on Professional Credentialing
🔹 Certified Fire Investigator (IAAI-CFI) – International Association of Arson Investigators
🔹 Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (NAFI-CFEI) – National Association of Fire Investigators

Most recently, Chief Yochum was awarded the Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designation by the Commission on Professional Credentialing, an entity of the Center for Public Safety Excellence. The CFO designation follows an extensive peer-review process and recognizes demonstrated excellence in seven measured components: experience, education, professional development, professional contributions, association membership, community involvement, and technical competence.

Earlier this year, Chief Yochum also earned the IAAI-CFI and NAFI-CFEI credentials, demonstrating continued professional development in fire and explosion investigation.

These accomplishments reflect Chief Yochum’s commitment to continued professional development and to bringing that knowledge and experience back to the members of the Effingham Fire Department and the community we serve.

Congratulations, Chief Brant Yochum, CFO, IAAI-CFI, NAFI-CFEI! 🚒🔥

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026 🔥

October 4–10 is Fire Prevention Week! This year’s theme is:

⚡ “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” 🔋🦸

From cell phones and laptops to power tools, toys, e-bikes, and countless other devices, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are part of our everyday lives. When damaged or charged improperly, however, they can become a serious fire hazard.

The Effingham Fire Department encourages everyone to practice a few simple charging habits:

🔌 Use the charger and cord that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
📱 Charge devices on a hard, flat surface — never on a bed, couch, or under a pillow.
🔋 Unplug devices when they are fully charged.
🚪 Keep charging devices away from exits and escape routes.
⚠️ Stop using a battery if you notice excessive heat, swelling, leaking, unusual odors, popping sounds, or smoke.
♻️ Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the regular trash. Dispose of them properly.

Fire prevention doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, everyday choices can make a big difference in protecting your home and family.

Throughout Fire Prevention Week, we’ll be sharing more fire and life-safety information to help keep our community safe.

🔥 Prevent fires. Protect your family. Protect Effingham.

🔥 TRAINING NEVER STOPS 🔥

This week, Effingham Fire Department members spent training night working on two fundamental fireground skills: forcible entry and pump operations.

Crews rotated through hands-on forcible entry evolutions at our training facility while other members worked on apparatus positioning, pump operations, and water supply.

These are skills our firefighters may be called upon to perform at any moment, and repetition is what builds confidence, efficiency, and teamwork when it matters most.

We’re fortunate to have a dedicated group of firefighters who continue putting in the time to train, learn, and improve so we’re ready when our community needs us.

Train hard. Stay ready. Serve Effingham. 🚒🔥

Some people just make a community better, and Greg Sapp is one of them. ❤️

Today our admin staff and duty crew got to stop by Greg's open house to celebrate his retirement from Premier Broadcasting. Greg, you've been the voice of Effingham for so many years, 52 years in fact! You've always had our backs showing up for our department in every way. You shared our news and cheered us on. You mean more to us than you know.

Thank you for everything, friend. We're going to miss you! Enjoy every minute of retirement. You've earned it, and you'll always be family here.

🎉 Happy Birthday, Carol! 🎂🚒

Please join us in wishing a very Happy Birthday to our Fire Department Chaplain, Carol!

Carol does so much for our department, but what means the most is simply the way she takes care of our people. She loves each and every one of us, is always there with an encouraging word, a smile, a prayer, or whatever else we may need. She has a way of lifting everyone up whenever she walks through the door.

We are incredibly lucky, and truly blessed, to have Carol as part of our fire department family. We love her just as much as she loves all of us, and our department is a better place because she is part of it.

And, of course, we can’t forget one of her other very important contributions… she makes the absolute BEST brownies! 😂

Happy Birthday, Carol! We hope you have a wonderful day. Thank you for taking such good care of all of us! ❤️🎂🚒
