ATTENTION ALL FAIRYTALE THINGS
If your home suddenly smells like Shrek’s swamp after a night of mean Weedrat stew, we need to talk.
Unlike Shrek's badonkadonk, natural gas and Propane are actually odorless. Utility companies add a weaponized stench called mercaptan to it so you can sniff out a leak.
"But Lord Farquaad, I just got my propane tank filled!"
Plot twist:
Propane tanks can play mind games with the scent. You are most likely to get a concentrated dose of pure swamp-funk if:
- Your tank ran very low or empty. When a tank sits empty, moisture and rust can build up inside. That sneaky rust chemically absorbs the mercaptan, masking the smell. But when a fresh delivery stirs things up, or as the tank empties out, that trapped, chaotic funk can suddenly release all at once.
- It’s a brand-new tank. Fresh steel can temporarily absorb the odor, making the smell unpredictable.
THE GOLDEN RULE: Unless the Onion Carriage delivery truck is actively idling in your driveway, WE DO NOT GUESS.
If you smell the funk inside, do NOT do any of the following:
- Do NOT flip a light switch.
- Do NOT let Donkey make waffles.
- Do NOT light an earwax candle to "fix the vibe."
- Do NOT text Lord Farquaad from the couch asking "u smell gas?"
A single static spark can send your roof into Far Far Away. If you smell it, use your legs:
- Get out of your swamp.
- Get far away.
- Call 911 from OUTSIDE.
"That'll do, Donkey. That'll do."
