Protecting Public Health and Property in Effingham County
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Friday, October 16, 2026

EFFINGHAM, IL. - Mitigation projects and activities that can reduce injuries and fatalities while maintaining vital services for Effingham County residents will be the main topic of discussion at the upcoming Effingham County Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee meeting. The meeting will be held at the Effingham County Emergency Operations Center, 311 West Miracle Ave., in Effingham, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 29.

The Committee began work in January to update the County’s All Hazards Mitigation Plan. This plan details the past severe weather events that have impacted the County and identifies mitigation projects and activities that can be taken before an event occurs to protect residents and critical services and infrastructure.

“Obtaining FEMA’s approval of our updated Plan will make all of the participants eligible to receive federal grant money for mitigation projects and activities if funds become available,” said Effingham County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator, Pamela Jacobs.

Projects identified by Committee members at this meeting will become part of the County’s updated All Hazards Mitigation Plan. While the committee has provided input on portions of the Plan, the Plan will be presented in full for public review and comment before it is submitted to the state and federal government for approval.

“A public forum will be conducted this fall for interested persons to review the Plan update and ask questions of Committee Members. A two-week public comment period will be held following the public forum to accommodate interested residents who are unable to attend. We want to make sure that anybody who is interested has an opportunity to review and comment on the draft Plan update,” added Jacobs.

Interested persons will be able to submit questions and comments to the Effingham County Emergency Management Agency office.

🌾🔥 Dry conditions and harvested fields can fuel fast-moving grass and brush fires, putting homes, livestock, structures and farm equipment at risk.

Have a farm fire safety plan. Know your evacuation routes, livestock relocation areas and how firefighters can access your property.

A little prevention can go a long way to help with a safe and successful harvest season.

📱Preparing a family communication plan now can make a big difference when the unexpected occurs.
If an emergency happened while your family was separated, would everyone know where to go, who to call, and how to reconnect?

✅Use text messages, social media and email to connect with friends and family during emergencies.
✅Choose a meeting place near your home. Then pick a second meeting place outside your neighborhood in case you can't return home
✅Choose an out-of-town contact everyone can call or text
✅Make sure children know important phone numbers
✅Keep important contact information written down—not just stored in your phone.
✅Have an emergency charging option for your phone and other mobile devices.

📱Remember: TEXTS MAY GO THROUGH WHEN PHONE CALLS DON'T. During a disaster keep calls brief, and use text messaging when possible, to help reduce demand on phone networks.
