BREAK-IN BAGS: CAN YOU CRACK THE CODE?

Think you have what it takes to break in and claim the loot? Put your brainpower to the test at your Eglin Community Library!

Our Break-In Bags are locked canvas pouches filled with prizes, but you can’t just open them, you have to solve the puzzles to unlock the loot!

Here’s how it works:
• Three puzzles are attached to the outside of each bag.
• Each puzzle has a numerical answer.
• Solve all three puzzles and use your answers to crack the lock combination.
Unlock the bag and the prizes are yours!

These fun, self-guided challenges are perfect for kids and teens who love a good mystery. Along the way, you’ll exercise your brain, build critical-thinking skills, and practice problem-solving.

Several Break-In Bags are available now at your Eglin Community Library ranging from easy to extra hard. Stop by, pick your challenge, and see if you can break in! These items are for in-house use only.

A LITTLE MAGIC, A LOT OF LAUGHTER & A WHOLE LOT OF POTION-MAKING!

Double, double, toil and trouble…we had a magical time, and our inner herbalists and alchemists were officially unleashed at Potions 101: Craft Your Own Apothecary Jar!

We had an absolute blast mixing, creating, and letting our imaginations run wild! Every one of us became a keeper of a little magic as we crafted our own mysterious apothecary jars. There were curious ingredients, creative concoctions, plenty of laughs, and so much fun!

A huge thank you to Ms. Joanna for hosting such a fun, hands-on experience! We came for the crafting and left with wonderful memories and our very own little treasures.

MYSTERY SOLVED… AND WHAT A NIGHT!

What a killer evening at the Eglin Community Library’s Phantom of the Theatre Murder Mystery!

We had a full house, plenty of suspense, and a whole lot of fun! Our guests put their detective skills to the test, followed the clues, uncovered secrets, and worked together to solve the mystery. The “theatre” was filled with excitement, laughter, and some seriously impressive sleuthing!

A round of applause for our super sleuths! Our top detectives took home certificates and prizes to celebrate their impressive investigative skills. But let’s be honest… the greatest prize of all? BRAGGING RIGHTS!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us, embraced the mystery, and helped make this event such a memorable success. Your enthusiasm made the night truly special!

We’re back, safe after Hurricane Isaias, and fully open!

Last week, your Eglin Community Library was delighted to celebrate Fire Prevention Week (4–10 October) with a special story time all about fire safety.

A big thank you to TSgt Gary Schulte and his crew for taking the time to visit with our families, teach us about fire safety, and read to the children. We’re also grateful to Sparky the Dog for making a special appearance and showing everyone around the fire truck, it was definitely a highlight of the event!

A special shoutout as well to Mr. Charles Butcher, Assistant Chief for Fire Prevention, for helping make this program so memorable.

We received so many wonderful compliments from our library parents, and one kiddo even told us about their new career goal of becoming a firefighter, which made our day! Thank you to everyone who joined us. We’re so happy to be back, safe, and fully open to serve our community.

**eBooks & digital magazines
**Audiobooks

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. This year, we're celebrating from 4-10 October 2026. This annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community: librarians and library professionals, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types, in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas.

As the American Library Association (ALA) continues to document the harms of censorship, we celebrate those whose advocacy and support are helping to end censorship in our libraries.

The Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) compiles data on book challenges from reports by library professionals in the field and from news stories published throughout the United States. Because many book challenges are not reported to the ALA or covered by the press, the data compiled by ALA represents only a snapshot of book censorship throughout the year.

ALA’s OIF tracked 4,235 unique titles challenged in 2025, the second highest ever documented by ALA. The highest ever documented was 4,240 in 2023.
Of the unique titles challenged in 2025, 1,671 (39%) represent the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people and people of color.

ALA documented 713 attempts to censor library materials and services, 487 of which targeted books.

In 2025, 92% of all book challenges were initiated by pressure groups, government officials and decision makers, up from 72% in 2024. Less than 3% of challenges originated from individual parents.

OIF documented 5,668 books banned from libraries (66% of the total challenged) in 2025. An additional 920 books were censored through access restrictions such as relocation or requiring parental permission. This is both the highest number of titles censored in one year and the highest rate of challenges resulting in censorship from 1990–2025.

LEGO fun was in full swing at Eglin Community Library today!

Our LEGO Club kiddos had an absolute blast putting their creativity and building skills to the test with a variety of fun LEGO challenge cards! From imaginative creations to tricky building challenges, there was plenty of laughter, problem-solving, and, of course, LOTS of LEGO!

One of today’s challenges was to build the tallest LEGO creation possible without it falling over! They had to think carefully about balance, stability, and just how high they could go. We loved seeing all the different approaches and creative solutions!
Thank you to all of our amazing LEGO builders for joining us today! We can’t wait to see what you create next!
