Our administrative professionals play an important role in supporting CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire’s all-risk emergency response efforts every day. Yesterday, a unit tour offered a group of our support staff an opportunity to step away from their offices, visit fire stations, a fire center, and Ramona Air Attack Base, and gain a firsthand look at the people, resources and work that keep our department moving.

A special thank you to the firefighters and staff who welcomed the tour group and took the time to share their work. Most importantly, thank you to our administrative professionals for the hard work and dedication you do behind the scenes each day. Your contributions are an important part of what makes this department work, and we are grateful for all that you do!

CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire has terminated the suspension of burning under permit and other uses of open fire, effective Monday, November 2. The decision follows improved weather conditions, including higher relative humidity, increased fuel moisture and improved fire protection resource availability.

The termination applies to all State Responsibility Area (SRA) lands within San Diego County. Residents are reminded that all burning activities remain subject to applicable permit requirements and restrictions.

Wildfire preparation happens behind the scenes. Pile preparation involves countless hours of hard, hands-on work as firefighters from Fox Fire Center work in Santa Ysabel, cutting vegetation and gathering it into well-formed piles to help reduce dense brush and hazardous fuel loads.

When weather and fuel conditions are appropriate, crews will return to burn the prepared piles, removing accumulated vegetation and further reducing fuel loads across the treatment area. This work is part of a larger fuels management effort taking place throughout San Diego County, helping prepare landscapes for healthier, more fire-resilient conditions.

More than 500 goats are grazing down wildfire fuels at County Parks, bringing a natural approach to vegetation management. Through a new partnership with small, local businesses, County of San Diego - Government and CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire are putting these hungry little helpers to work.

Star Valley Park in Valley Center was selected as the first location for the program, where the goats will have access to graze across all 38 acres. Their grazing helps manage vegetation in areas previously cleared, offering a natural way to keep those areas maintained.

The program brings another environmentally friendly tool to wildfire preparedness while creating opportunities for small, local grazing businesses. With County of San Diego Parks and Recreation managing more than 59,000 acres, there are plenty of places where these hardworking grazers could make themselves at home.

Meet Helitender 33, the newest addition to CAL FIRE San Diego’s Aviation Program. With a fuel capacity of 1,400 gallons, this brand-new mobile fueling unit is the first of its next-generation design among CAL FIRE’s 11 helitack bases statewide, with the same specifications planned for future helitenders throughout the department.

Keeping the Sikorsky S-70i CAL FIRE Hawk helicopters airborne during vegetation fires and extended incidents requires a reliable fuel supply. Helitender 33 can be driven to an incident’s temporary helibase throughout San Diego County and neighboring counties, providing fuel in the field to help maximize flight time over the fire and support ongoing aerial firefighting operations.

CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire Station 15 Miller will reopen Friday, October 30, at 8:00 a.m., following the completion of critical infrastructure repairs. The station will be staffed daily with four to five personnel, maintaining coverage of a Type 3 fire engine and a water tender. With the station back in operation, crews will continue providing emergency response services to the surrounding community in Fallbrook.

Did you know San Diego County is recognized as having more community Fire Safe Councils than any other county in the nation, with more than 50?

Fire Safe Councils bring residents, fire agencies and community partners together to reduce wildfire risk, improve home and neighborhood preparedness, strengthen evacuation readiness, and implement projects that help protect lives, property and natural resources.

We recently teamed up with multiple agencies, Fire Safe Council of San Diego County members and community leaders to celebrate a year of accomplishments, recognize outstanding leadership and discuss the latest topics in emergency preparedness. Awards were presented to individuals and organizations making a meaningful difference in wildfire preparedness and community safety.

CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire was proud to present the Wynola Estates Fire Safe Council with the Project of the Year award! Located in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, Wynola Estates is home to approximately 200 residents. Before this project, the community had two primary routes out, both connecting to State Route 78 east of Santa Ysabel. Recognizing the importance of additional evacuation options, the council worked with community members, secured grant funding and established agreements with private landowners to create a third access route connecting the community to the town of Wynola.

Congratulations to the Wynola Estates Fire Safe Council for this well-deserved recognition and for demonstrating the impact of community-driven wildfire prevention!

As Otay Mesa continues to grow, preparing for complex emergencies takes on new importance. Recently, our firefighters from Battalion 3 and San Diego Fire-Rescue Department teamed up with Pio Pico Energy Center and Airgas for a hazardous materials drill simulating an anhydrous ammonia leak during transfer operations at the Pio Pico Energy Center.

The exercise included a full response scenario, incident command, patient recovery, a live decontamination setup and hazard mitigation. Each phase gave personnel an opportunity to practice the coordination and skills needed to manage a hazardous materials emergency and protect those in its path.

Within Station 38 Otay Mesa’s area, significant commercial development is underway alongside plans for a new interstate and U.S.-Mexico border crossing expected to rival the Tijuana Port of Entry in scale and traffic. With several hazardous materials incidents in the area in recent years, this training helps prepare firefighters for high-risk, low-frequency emergencies that demand a coordinated response.

33 new firefighters, three fire centers and one historic first for CAL FIRE San Diego! Personnel from Rainbow, Fox and San Diego Fire Centers came together to assist with the first-ever Fire Fighter I hand crew new hire class, marking a new milestone in training across the unit.

The class included five days of crew orientation at Fox Fire Center and two weeks of instruction with our Training Bureau, building the foundational skills needed for the demands of working on a hand crew. We’re proud to welcome these 33 firefighters to the San Diego Unit and look forward to seeing them grow, serve and succeed in their new careers!

Yesterday marked an exciting milestone for CAL FIRE as the department celebrated the graduation of its first department-sponsored Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class. Held at the Ben Clark Training Center in cooperation with the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC), the inaugural class represents an important step forward in expanding emergency medical training opportunities statewide.

Among the graduates were three firefighters from CAL FIRE’s San Diego Unit who successfully completed the program. Their accomplishment reflects the continued growth of professional training and the expanding role of emergency medical services within CAL FIRE.

Congratulations to our three San Diego graduates and the entire inaugural class on this achievement. We’re proud to celebrate their success and this milestone in CAL FIRE’s history!
