🍿 Three days. Three dark tales. One very good excuse to pop in. 🧛🎨

This Halloween week, Pop In & Learn is taking a turn for the spooky with three lunchtime lectures exploring monsters, myths, history, and the art of being afraid.

🧛 Tuesday, Oct. 27 — Count Dracula & the Birth of a Myth
Join playwright Gary Hall to explore Bram Stoker’s original Dracula, the legend it created, and what it takes to bring the Count from page to stage.

🩸 Wednesday, Oct. 28 — The Man Behind the Myth: Vlad the Impaler
Dr. Jessica Brown introduces us to the very real—and notoriously brutal—15th-century ruler whose bloody reputation became the stuff of legend.

🎨 Thursday, Oct. 29 — Beautiful Nightmares: Exploring Fear in Art History
Emily Turner & Casey Rapp take us through the monsters, madness, macabre, and haunting imagery artists have used to capture our fears throughout history.

⏰ All three begin at noon
📍 Mahony Family Library Auditorium
🍿 And yes, there’s a popcorn bar for registered attendees.

Come for one, two, or make a week of it and join us for all three. Registration is required, so pop in and save your seat! 👻🍿

New story. New voices. New signs. And this time, we came prepared for the weather. 😎🌧️📚

arborREADING is back at the South Arkansas Arboretum! 🌳🍂

After Mother Nature gave our last set of signs a little more of an adventure than we planned, we’ve tried a new weatherproofing method that should keep this story on the trail and looking good much longer. 🤞

And just in time for spooky season, our newest book walk features The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams and illustrated by Megan Lloyd! 🎃👻

But don’t just read along—listen along! Scan the QR codes as you make your way through the Arboretum to hear the story brought to life by SouthArk Education students Clarabeth Black, Aiden Gray, Maddox Hampton, Anthony Hodges, Jacob Willard, and Charidey Woods. 🎧📖

These future educators took us on one very fun, very spooky journey, and we’re so grateful to them—and to Dr. Lisa Oden—for sharing their time and talents with this project. Their participation helps make reading engaging, accessible, and FUN for young learners while encouraging literacy and imagination beyond the classroom. 💛

arborREADING is presented in partnership with The 1988 Bookstore and made possible through Arts Programming grant funding from the Union County Community Foundation.

So grab the kids, head to the Arboretum, and see if you’re brave enough to follow the story all the way to the end. 👀🍂📚

Today, Criminal Justice students visited the Mahony Family Library makerspace to build models of prisons and cells, turning what they’ve learned about correctional facilities into something they could design, discuss, and see from every angle. It was a creative way to think through how these spaces are organized and how design affects the people inside them.

Take a look at their work!

STUDENTS: Your Sunday study spot is ready!

The Mahony Family Library is now open Sundays from 1–5 p.m. Whether you need to catch up on assignments, get a head start on the week, or find a quiet place to focus, we’d love to see you.

We’re trying Sunday hours as a pilot this semester to give SouthArk students more time to use the library as our campus grows. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome during all library hours. Community use ends at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and is not available on Sundays.

We hope to see you this Sunday!
