We offer a lot of program options…but we don’t yet offer a Firecat certification program 😞.

If Bernice could lend some expertise, and with Kansas Board of Regents approval we’d love to offer the first program in the nation! 🐈‍⬛ 🚒

The Wichita Police & Fire Foundation has a new and exclusive profile on one of Wichita Fire Department's most special members. Introducing WPFF's first service animal of the month: “Firecat Bernice”.
WPFF recently interviewed the firefighters at Station # 5 and learned that Bernice showed up at the station one day and has been a member of the team ever since.
Bernice lives at the station but is free to come and go as she pleases. She is definitely part of the neighborhood. Bernice can't exactly carry a firehose but she contributes by keeping the station pest free. Firefighters say that Bernice has caught mice, lizards, and even a flying bat in her quest to protect her firehouse sanctuary. Bernice started living at the station when she was young and even thought her true age is unknown, Bernice has been at the station for the past 2 years. With her long 2 year tenure Bernice actually has seniority over 4 other human firefighters in Station # 5.
Always wanting to help, firefighters say Bernice has actually been on some actual calls as she has been found as a stowaway on the firetruck when everyone returns to the station. Station # 5 firefighters said that if Bernice could no longer work as a firecat she would probably want to be a cat in the military or work on an airboat in a swamp.

Butler CC alum Carter is out there doing good things!

HELLO and a big THANK YOU to Firefighter Carter Dickman from the Wichita Fire Department. FF Dickman is currently assigned to Station # 4 A-shift and has been with WFD for over two and a half years.
We asked a few questions … 🚒 Are you a dog or cat person? 🔥 I have a rescue Corgie named Theo or Theodore. 🚒 Who is your favorite person? 🔥 I credit everything I have in my life to him and that is my dad. Work ethic, attitude, and compassion. He shaped and molded me into the person I am today. 🚒 What do you find most rewarding about your career in fire service? 🔥 Being that support and that person that people can look to - on possibly their worst day. It’s cliche to say… I really take pride in it and have satisfaction helping in my community. 🔴 When you run into FF Dickman you will have to ask him how the whole crew played along (I mean everyone was in on it) with Lt. Morgan from Community Risk Reduction - they pulled a great prank. (They got him good).
Again, Thank You Wichita Fire Department for a few minutes of your time to share a few insights.
