The Paso del Norte Health Foundation in El Paso, Texas is one of the largest private foundations on the U.S./Mexico border.

The Health Foundation works effectively across these boundaries in partnership and collaboration with other organizations to plan and implement programs that address disease prevention and health education. The main focus of the Health Foundation is to help those within the region who are most in need. To envision the region where all people, regardless of socio-economic status have the knowledge, resources, and environment they need to live healthy lives. To achieve this, the Health Foundation has developed a creative, pro-active approach to improving the long-term health of the region. Below are the health priority areas of funding:

Unsolicited grant proposals are not accepted by the Health Foundation. However, when launching a new Request For Proposals (RFP), the Health Foundation offers grant workshops for nonprofit organizations to better understand the purpose of the initiative or program and how to respond to the RFP. Program officers are available to discuss ideas for future programs and welcome suggestions from regional organizations.

! Still can't get the jingle "Walk El Paso Walk" out of your head? Neither can we! 🎶

In 1998, the Paso del Norte Health Foundation launched Walk El Paso to encourage physical activity among sedentary residents through educational materials, walking groups, community events, and a media campaign. 👟

The initiative promoted the message, “Walk El Paso Walk, 20 minutes a day, three times a week,” to encourage people to be more active. The Foundation invested $2.5 million in the five-year initiative. Its success inspired the creation of Walk Doña Ana, Walk Otero, and Camino Juárez. 🇺🇸 🇲🇽

On World Mental Health Day, we recognize the importance of creating communities where mental health is understood, supported, and prioritized.

Through our Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being priority area, the Paso del Norte Health Foundation works alongside Think.Change and the El Paso Behavioral Health Consortium to promote understanding and acceptance, strengthen collaboration among behavioral health providers, and improve access to mental health resources across our region.

A proud Miner and dedicated community leader! ⛏️🧡

Tracy J. Yellen, CEO of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation and Paso del Norte Community Foundation, was presented with UTEP’s prestigious Gold Nugget Award for the College of Liberal Arts, recognizing her leadership, service, and lasting impact on our community.

Since earning her Master of Public Administration from UTEP in 1995, Tracy has remained closely connected to her alma mater while dedicating her career to strengthening the Paso del Norte region through philanthropy.

Celebrating 25 years of a healthier, smoke-free El Paso! 🫁

El Paso County recently recognized the 25th anniversary of the Smoke Free Ordinance with a proclamation celebrating the community-wide efforts that helped create healthier public spaces across our region.

In 2001, El Paso made history as the first city in Texas to adopt a Smoke Free Ordinance of its kind. This milestone was made possible through the commitment of residents, community advocates, public health professionals, health care partners, businesses, organizations, and local leaders working together to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke.

That work continues today through A Smoke Free Paso del Norte and the Paso del Norte To***co Control Network, as partners educate our community about emerging to***co and va**ng trends and support healthier environments.

We’re proud to celebrate 25 years of collaboration and continued commitment to a healthier Paso del Norte region! 💙

Our 2025 Annual Report highlights another year of growth, stewardship, and investment, building on the Paso del Norte Health Foundation’s 30-year legacy in the region.

The PdNHF was established in 1995 from the sale of Providence Memorial Hospital to Tenet Healthcare Corporation, with an initial $130 million from the sale proceeds.

It is a supporting organization of the Paso del Norte Community Foundation and works with the Fundación Paso del Norte, a Juárez-based nonprofit. Visit pdnhf.org to see how these organizations work together to make a difference in the region.
