lass Elementary being nominated and receiving the prestigious National Blue Ribbon Award in 2012. This award honors schools for academic excellence and for significant progress in closing the achievement gap. The school was named Frederick Douglass to honor the great abolitionist who over came such adversities as being separated from his mother who was then sold. Douglass grew up illiterate due to the laws prohibiting black students to attend school. He also faced many other economic and social hurdles levied against his people. Though our demographics have changed to an almost completely Hispanic Community, some of the challenges incurred by being a border community still exist. Our goal and mission have not changed since 1883, teaching and training students to be productive members of society.
