Yep.

The National 9-1-1 Program describes CAD as a system for capturing and sharing critical incident information.

They're right.

It is also, occasionally, an unexpected leadership coach.

Because nothing builds patience, teamwork, adaptability, and emotional regulation quite like CAD deciding it needs a minute...right when everyone else doesn't.

Dispatchers know the drill.
You click.
Nothing happens.
You click again.
Now you've accidentally opened it twice.
Someone asks if CAD is acting up.
Everyone already knows the answer.

The room doesn't stop just because the system does.

Calls still have to be answered. Units still need information. Priorities still change by the second.

So dispatchers do what dispatchers always do.
They adapt.
They communicate.
They troubleshoot.
They keep the work moving while silently hoping the loading wheel disappears before anyone says, "Have you tried refreshing it?"

There is probably a lesson about resilience hidden in all of this.
Most dispatchers would settle for CAD co-operating instead.

Today we celebrated the retirement of Alejandro “Alex” Medina after more than 14 years of dedicated service to the El Paso County 911 District and our community. From multiple roles to lasting relationships across the region, Alex’s professionalism, expertise, and commitment to public safety have made a true impact. While we’ll miss his leadership and friendship, we’re grateful for the legacy he leaves behind. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate Alex and wish him well in his next chapter.
