Last Thursday, the South Bay Police & Fire Memorial Foundation held its 50th Annual Medal of Valor Awards Ceremony honoring individuals who demonstrated extraordinary bravery beyond the call of duty.

Congratulations to Sergeant Alex Leavitt, Officer Brook Marshall, Officer Collin Furrows, and Officer Baron Gaunt on receiving the Medal of Valor, and to Detective Mike Keltner on receiving a Life Saving Award.

In February 2025, Sergeant Leavitt and Officers Furrows, Gaunt, and Marshall responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a woman screaming for help during an active assault inside an apartment. As officers arrived, they could hear the screams from outside while witnesses urgently directed them to the unit.

When officers reached the doorway, they encountered a horrifying scene. A woman suffering from multiple stab wounds lay critically injured on the floor, while an armed suspect, later identified as her son, stood nearby holding a knife. Despite repeated commands, the suspect refused to drop the weapon.

Without hesitation, Sergeant Leavitt and Officer Marshall placed themselves directly between the armed suspect and the victim to stop the attack and protect her. Their actions created the opportunity for Officers Furrows and Gaunt to safely pull the victim from the apartment and begin emergency care.

Moments later, Officer Mike Keltner arrived on scene and assisted Officer Gaunt with applying tourniquets to control the severe bleeding until ESFD paramedics arrived. Because of the officers’ quick actions and teamwork under extreme pressure, the victim survived and ultimately made a full recovery. After a prolonged standoff, the suspect was safely taken into custody.

These officers made the conscious decision to move toward danger in order to save a life. Their actions represent the highest standards of bravery, professionalism, and commitment to protecting others.

On Tuesday, around 8:45 p.m., officers responded to the 700 block of South Pacific Coast Highway for a reported theft involving a female who had reportedly left the area with possibly two other females.

Officers located a woman matching the description sitting in a nearby vehicle. During their investigation, officers recovered a loaded .22 caliber handgun with one round in the chamber and four additional rounds in the magazine.

Two females were arrested for outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants, and a male was arrested for possession of a concealed firearm and possession of a loaded firearm in public. All three subjects were transported to jail, and the stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to the business.

Weekend shift wrap-up…

A vehicle code violation near Main Street and Imperial Avenue led to a traffic stop at Imperial Highway and Pershing Drive, resulting in the recovery of a loaded 9mm firearm, the arrest of the driver, and the vehicle being impounded.

Charges include:
• Driving with a BAC of .08% and above
• Carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle without a valid permit
• Possession of a loaded firearm
• Possession of a firearm without a serial number
• Possession of a controlled substance while being armed

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day to honor the courageous law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

Today, we remember the 363 officers (109 officers killed during 2025 and the additional 254 officers killed in previous years) added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., and we pay tribute to four El Segundo Police Officers who gave their lives in the line of duty.

On November 17, 1935, Officer Robert Grow was directing traffic when he was struck and killed by a vehicle. He had served with the department for only 5 months.

On June 13, 1949, Officer Alexander C. Haddock, a 14-year veteran, responded to a burglary alarm at the El Segundo High School. When he arrived, he found a burglar with whom he became engaged in a gun battle. Haddock killed the suspect but sustained a bullet wound to his right leg. Doctors were unable to remove the bullet and Haddock died as a result of complications of his injury over one year later.

On July 22, 1957, Officer Richard A. Phillips, 28, with two years of service, and Officer Milton G. Curtis, 25, with two months of service, stopped a man at Rosecrans Avenue and Pacific Coast Hwy for running a red light. The officers were unaware that the driver had just tied up 4 teenagers, robbed them, forced them to strip and r***d a 15-year-old girl prior to stealing their car. While writing the ticket, both officers were shot to death by the driver with a .22 caliber revolver.

On January 29, 2003, Gerald F. Mason was arrested for the murders of El Segundo Police Officers Richard Phillips and Milton Curtis. Mason later pled guilty in a Los Angeles County court and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms.
