PRESS RELEASE 10/22/2026

On Tuesday October 20, 2026, Elbert County Sheriff's Office investigators were notified by the Elbert County School District of 2 incidents of possible sexual misconduct that occurred on a school bus. During the investigation it was determined that an adult age student sexually assaulted two juvenile students on separate occasions while being transported on Elbert County School Bus Route 45s. As a result of the investigation an 18-year-old student was arrested and charged with 2 counts each of Cruelty to Children 1st degree and 2 counts of False imprisonment, and 1 count each of Aggravated Child Molestation, Aggravated So**my, and Child Molestation. Both victim's families have been notified. This is still an active investigation and no further details are available at this time.

On Tuesday, September 29, 2026 Elbert County Sheriff's Office Investigators received information of an infant having been buried in a wooden box several months prior on property on Jones Ferry Road. Based on the information provided a search warrant was obtained for the property. Sheriff's Office personnel along with GBI Agents utilized witness statements, a cadaver K9, a drone, and ground probing equipment to locate a possible burial site. During the excavation process, investigators located a wooden box buried several feet deep. The box contained human remains which were consistent with a near full term baby and these remains were sent to the Medical Examiner's Office. During the investigation, it was reported the infant was still born, and was then wrapped in a towel and placed in a closet of the home for a couple of days before being buried in a wooden box that had been built. As a result of the investigation, Audra Summerville has been arrested and charged with Concealing the Death of Another in violation of Ga. Code 16-10-31. Warrants have also been issued for Joshua Sewell for Concealing the Death of Another. This is still an active investigation.

Sheriff Callaway would like to thank Elbert County Investigators, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Elbert County Coroner's Office, Elbert County Emergency Services, and the Elbert County Road Department for their teamwork and diligence in this difficult case.

Another large quantity of illegal drugs has been taken off the streets of Elbert County. Great work by every agency involved in making our community safer.

On Monday, September 21, deputies with the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vacant residence on Bowers Street in Bowman following a report of shots fired.

During the investigation, deputies determined that the property owner encountered a male subject inside the residence. The male attempted to assault the homeowner, and an altercation occurred between the two individuals, during which shots were fired. The male intruder was struck and fled the scene.

The intruder was located a short time later and received medical treatment before being transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He is currently in stable condition and remains in the custody of the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office.

This incident remains under investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
