***ALC Spotlight***
Yeoman Chief, CPO Reanna Oudman
FROM Reanna:
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALC AND WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN ALC?
I left active duty on the temporary separation program after I had my first son in 2022 and went into the Reserves when we were stationed in Hawaii. To come back onto Active Duty and keep our Co-Location, we chose Elizabeth City since it was a hub that could best keep us together. I am the Yeoman Chief of the Personnel and Administration office where we oversee all pay and administrative transactions and correspondence for our 209 ALC members.
WHAT ARE YOUR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES?
Our shop is responsible for anything pay and administration related for ALC’s active duty and reserve members. I am responsible for auditing most of the work of the YN2’s as well as monitoring upcoming end of enlistments, separations, incoming and outgoing personnel. I assist with additional requests such as rosters and reports, awards, record and pay errors, and approval of PCS travel funds. I am in charge of the body composition program as well as urinalysis testing for military personnel here at ALC.
CAN YOU HIGHLIGHT SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PROJECTS YOU'VE WORKED ON DURING YOUR TIME HERE?
I enjoy directly working with members on rectifying pay or personnel issues they are having. I love helping people, so being able to bring closure to a pay problem or just providing a listening ear and some guidance to someone at a crossroads in their career or even issues in their personal lives, makes my job worthwhile.
WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST ABOUT WORKING FOR ALC?
I love how different it is from any other unit I’ve been to. I’ve also never worked with civilians before, but it’s really neat to see how they work hand in hand with our active duty members to make everything run smoothly at such a large and critical unit. Seeing the start to finish process of aircraft maintenance from all over the Coast Guard is awesome!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO PURSUE A SIMLAR CAREER PATH?
I joined the Coast Guard expecting to do only 4 years and then get out and go to veterinary school. Here I am 17 years later (and not a veterinarian), but it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I’ve seen so many areas of the world I would never have imagined, plus you’re not going to find camaraderie anywhere else like on active duty. Even if you’re debating just one enlistment, I always say go for it. If you hate it, you’re done in 4 years. If you love it, you’ll make some of the greatest friends who become like family while seeing and doing things that most other people would never experience.
COULD YOU SHARE A FUN OR SURPRISING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF OR WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO MOST OUTSIDE OF WORK?
While being in the Coast Guard stationed on two cutters, I have visited over 20 different countries; my favorite being Senegal. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two crazy boys.
