We understand there is a bear cub in a tree near Hwy91 and Hwy 19E. The mother bear has left the cub at this location most likely to go get food. The mother bear will come back for the cub. No need to call 911 for this, it is out of the road way and not creating any hazard at this time. Please do not approach or go to the area to look as extra activity could scare mother bear or cause extended separation time from the cub. If the bear comes into the road way or starts to become a safety issue, please then call 911.

NASHVILLE โ€” Beginning Oct. 15, Tennesseans must obtain a free burn permit before burning leaves or natural debris or conducting prescribed burns. As wildfire season begins, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry (TDF) encourages residents and visitors to observe National Fire Prevention Week by practicing fire prevention and exercising extra caution when burning outdoors. Tennessee averages about 1,000 wildfires each year, burning approximately 18,000 acres.

โ€œMore than 90% of wildfires in Tennessee are caused by human activities, including escaped debris burns,โ€ State Forester Heather Slayton said. โ€œThat means individual actions matter โ€“ choosing to avoid burning on high fire danger days, getting a burn permit, taking steps to burn safely and staying with your fire until it is completely out can make a meaningful difference in preventing destructive wildfires in our state.โ€

TDF is Tennesseeโ€™s lead wildfire agency and is responsible by law for administering the burn permit system. Burn permits help TDF communicate when and where conditions are safe for burning and are issued only when fire danger is at an acceptable level. When hazardous conditions โ€” such as high winds, very low humidity or extremely dry vegetation and debris โ€” increase wildfire risk, TDF temporarily pauses permit issuance until conditions improve.

๐Ÿ“ฃ A Little Help for Our Locals!

The Tennessee Department of Health has been handing out these informational cards. We noticed one small problem: the back tells you to โ€œcall dispatchโ€โ€ฆ but doesnโ€™t actually provide a phone number. ๐Ÿ˜…

So, because we like to make things just a little easier around here, we decided to help out!

Update to TCAT lockdown!
no direct threat was made to the Elizabethton campus.

09/10/2026

Just before 1:00 PM this afternoon, an incident involving local law enforcement occurred in the vicinity of Central Office on Church Street. No threat was made or existed at any school system building, but all buildings were placed into a soft lockdown out of an abundance of caution at the request of the Elizabethton Police Department. At this time schools have resumed normal operation. As always, we want to thank our SROs and all of EPD for the work they do to keep our schools and community safe!
