Village staff recently participated in a practice exercise in the Emergency Operations Center to strengthen emergency preparedness and coordination.

These exercises allow Village emergency responders and civilian personnel to practice sharing information, coordinating resources, and working together during a simulated emergency.

Regular practice helps ensure our teams are prepared to respond effectively when an actual emergency occurs, and our community needs us most.

The Elk Grove Village Fire Department recently hosted its Retiree Luncheon, bringing together former and current members to reconnect, share memories, and celebrate the people who have helped shape our department over the years.

It was a wonderful opportunity to recognize the dedication, service, and lasting contributions of our retirees, whose commitment to our community will always be appreciated.

Thank you to all our retirees for your years of service and for being an important part of the EGVFD family!

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK | OCTOBER 4–10

This Fire Prevention Week, we’re reminding our community about two simple ways to help keep your home and family safe: working smoke alarms and safe charging practices.

🏠 Smoke Alarm Safety
• Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home.
• Test your alarms at least once a month.
• Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older.
• Make sure your alarms are working and accessible to everyone in your household.

🔋 Charge Safely
Many everyday devices use lithium-ion batteries, including phones, laptops, power tools, toys, e bikes, and scooters. These batteries can become dangerous if damaged or charged improperly.

• Use the charger recommended by the manufacturer.
• Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, never on a bed or couch.
• Stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, smokes, or has an unusual smell.
• Unplug devices when they are fully charged.
• Charge larger devices such as e-bikes and scooters away from exits.

Small steps can make a big difference when it comes to preventing fires and protecting your family.

🚁 DRONES IN FIRE DEPARTMENT TRAINING

Drones have become an invaluable tool for modern fire departments, offering rapid aerial intelligence that improves situational awareness, enhances firefighter safety, and supports quicker, more informed decision making on the scene.

Whether used for structure fires, hazardous materials incidents, search and rescue, technical rescue, or post incident assessment, drones allow teams to see what they otherwise could not, without sending members into dangerous environments unnecessarily.

As these programs continue to expand, consistent and realistic training is essential. Regular drills ensure operators remain proficient with both the technology and the tactics, keeping skills sharp so drone deployments are seamless, safe, and effective when it matters most.

During a recent high angle rescue training, a drone allowed our members to see the scene from a perspective that could not have been reached without this valuable technology.

🚒 CITIZENS FIRE ACADEMY COMPLETE!

On Wednesday night we wrapped up another successful Citizens Fire Academy!

Over the course of the academy, participants had the opportunity to learn more about the Elk Grove Village Fire Department, experience hands on training, and get a behind the scenes look at the work our firefighters do every day.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and made this year’s academy such a success! We hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we enjoyed having you with us.

Last week, our firefighters trained on a realistic scenario involving a vehicle that had crashed into a building.

Using our Fire Department training facility, crews practiced responding to a vehicle fire while also preparing to enter the damaged structure and rescue simulated civilians inside.

After extinguishing the exterior fire, firefighters had to reposition the initial hose line or deploy a second line to address fire that had spread into the building.

While we hope our firefighters never face an emergency like this, realistic training helps prepare our crews to respond safely, work together, and handle the unexpected when our community needs us most.
