🏊 Before the holiday weekend, Cosumnes CSD Recreation Coordinator Rachel Schramm has a message for families.

At Water Safety Night, families gathered at the Wackford Community & Aquatic Complex to learn, practice, and prepare for a safer summer around the water.

For Rachel, who has spent years as a lifeguard, the reason this event matters is simple: β€œThe biggest takeaway is drowning prevention,” Rachel said. β€œAround any body of water.”

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, many families will be heading to pools, lakes, and rivers. When asked what she wishes every parent knew before getting in the water, Rachel’s answer came quickly:

β€œLife jacket safety.”

A properly fitted life jacket can make a major difference, especially for children and inexperienced swimmers. Families are also encouraged to swim with a buddy, stay in supervised areas, keep children within arm’s reach, take breaks, and stay hydrated.

Cosumnes Fire also offers a Life Jacket Loan Program to help families borrow life jackets before heading out for the day or weekend.

πŸ‘‹ Water Safety Night may be over, but the message continues all summer:

Plan ahead. Watch closely. Wear a life jacket when needed.

⚠️ High-risk season for wild mushrooms right now. Not worth the gamble.

The California Department of Public Health is warning that toxic death cap mushrooms are blooming in large numbers across California. Avoid foraging for wild mushrooms.

Poisonous mushrooms have been identified in the community. Some can cause serious illness, liver damage, or death. Cooking them does not make them safe, and even a small amount can be dangerous.

β€’ Do not pick or eat wild mushrooms
β€’ Call 911 if you suspect mushroom poisoning
