🚨Consumnes River Elementary & CW Dillard Elementary will be closed tomorrow Monday, January 9th because they’re inside the evacuation zone. Schools may experience power outages in the coming days, but that is generally not a reason we close schools. Stay tuned to your e-mail for any important messages from your school. If you encounter flooding, downed power lines, or any other unsafe conditions on your way to school, turn around. Stay safe!

In the Elk Grove Unified School District, the wellness and safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. After meeting with the Office of Emergency Services, continuous monitoring of weather conditions across our District and thoughtful planning to meet the needs of our students and staff, EGUSD officials are following the order from the Office of Emergency Services to close Cosumnes River Elementary School and C.W. Dillard Elementary School effective Monday, January 9, 2023. The decision to close these District schools during these extraordinary conditions was taken very seriously.

Please know that these closures affect Cosumnes River Elementary School and C.W. Dillard Elementary School only. All other EGUSD schools are to remain open.

Please continue to check your email and the EGUSD website at egusd.net for details regarding when Cosumnes River Elementary School and C.W. Dillard Elementary School will reopen as well as details regarding student meal distribution.

Storm watch: A reminder that school is the safest place for students to be during big storms like the one expected tomorrow. That is, unless there is flooding between your home and school. Do not attempt to cross flooded areas.

EGUSD Facilities & Maintenance crews are monitoring and ready to respond to any clogged drains or downed branches. They were actually doing that on Sunday & Monday so we’re in a better place for this storm.

Consider leaving the house five minutes earlier tomorrow so we can all be extra cautious and patient at pick up and drop off.

If you’re near the Cosumnes River or in low-lying areas please sign up for emergency alerts such as evacuation warnings and orders. Stay safe!

It’s a time of transitions on the EGUSD School Board. We said farewell to Dr. Crystal Martinez-Alire and thanked her for her many years of service. And we welcomed new board member Michael Vargas. I was also elected to serve as Board President for the next year. Wish me luck!

I enjoyed sharing with and learning from school board colleagues throughout the state at last week’s California School Boards Association Annual Education Conference. This year, I focused on attending workshops about supporting the social-emotional development of our students. EGUSD and the Sacramento region were well represented.

Just wrapped up another meeting of the California School Boards Association’s Delegate Assembly. Two days of working with my counterparts in our region and across the state to prioritize the ways in which we will advocate on behalf of our students, staff and families. I was honored to be selected as a facilitator to help develop the organization’s agenda for the next two years.

📢Update on Rancho Cordova middle/high school📣

I frequently get questions on the status of EGUSD's forthcoming middle and high school campus in Rancho Cordova. Here is an update:

Ensuring we have the appropriate facilities is one of my priorities as a school board member. The school district is doing all that it can to move forward on the completion of our middle and high school campus in Rancho Cordova, which for now we’re calling the “Sun River” campus.

Unfortunately, there are significant factors outside of our control that preclude me from being able to give you a timeline for completion of that project. Chief among these are:

1. Ongoing litigation among the current owners of the land
2. Lack of access and infrastructure to these parcels (roadways, sidewalks or water, sewer, electrical and the like)
3. Insufficient enrollment from the Anatolia/Sun Rise Douglas area of the District

I know that last bullet may be surprising given the pace of residential development in that area, but we currently have 388 middle schoolers and 631 high schoolers there. The optimal enrollment for a middle school and high school according to our facilities masterplan and educational specifications is 1,200 and 2,200 students respectively. This threshold is critical because it is what allows the District to qualify for state funding to build the schools, and to main fiscal solvency once the schools are operation.

That said, we are continuing our negotiations with the current property owners, working with the City of Rancho Cordova on the infrastructure issues, and have engaged an architect so that we will be ready to build as soon as enrollment as these other factors fall into place.

I wish the news was better. I will continue to provide updates, but feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Thank you for your continued patience.

Yours truly,

Nancy
