Commercial Structure Fire in Cleveland Township.

Just before 3:00 AM, Baugo Township Fire Department was dispatched on automatic aid to Cleveland Township for a reported commercial building fire.

Ladder 191 responded, gaining access through a high-security gate and positioning to protect the exterior pallet storage area. Shortly after our arrival, the incident was upgraded to a second alarm.

With a volunteer firefighter available at the station, Engine 141 was able to respond and play a critical role in supplying water to the attack pumper.

Ladder 191’s crew was assigned to assist with the interior fire attack. After entering the building, our crew linked up with Elkhart City's Truck company and worked through heavy smoke to locate the Engine crew. Once reunited, firefighters assisted with extinguishing the fire and accessing remaining pockets of fire.

After the main body of fire was extinguished, Baugo’s crew conducted positive-pressure ventilation using our onboard fans before returning inside to assist with overhaul operations.

Both Baugo companies cleared the scene shortly after 6:00 AM.

We’re proud of the strong working relationships we share with our mutual aid partners. This combined effort isolated the damage to a corner of the building, saving product and the other parts of the building.

Thank you to Cleveland Township and all responding agencies for the teamwork and coordination on scene. We appreciate everyone who worked together to protect our communities.

Some of you may have noticed the unusual cars in our front parking lot recently.

For the past several months, Baugo Township Fire Department has been hosting and teaching Firefighter I & II, training new firefighters from departments throughout the area and neighboring counties.

One required skill is automobile extrication—learning to safely remove patients from vehicles involved in crashes.

This training was made possible through great community partnerships. Crockers Hauling and Tom’s Auto provided the vehicles, while Citizens First Fire Training provided the extrication tools and specialized instructors.

Hands-on training with real vehicles and equipment gives our newest firefighters valuable experience before facing these situations on an actual emergency.

We’re proud to provide this training in Baugo Township and grateful for the partnerships that make it possible.

Thank you to everyone including our full-time staff. For investing in the next generation of firefighters!

Traffic & Power Outage Advisory

Expect travel delays and the potential for power outages along Mishawaka Road between County Road 3 and State Road 19.

A vehicle struck a utility pole this morning, causing damage that requires the power company to respond and make repairs. Motorists should use caution in the area and expect possible traffic disruptions while crews work.

Please avoid the area if possible and allow extra time for travel.

Baugo Township Fire Department Responds to Boat Crash on St. Joseph River

Just before 7:00 p.m. today, Baugo Township Fire Department was dispatched for a reported boat crash on the St. Joseph River.

Due to reports that patients were located on the opposite side of the river, Cleveland Township Fire Department was requested to respond and assist with patient care. Baugo Township deployed our rescue boat, Ladder 191 with water rescue equipment, and an ambulance.

With reports of multiple injuries, Elkhart City Fire Department was requested to provide an additional ambulance. With Baugo deploying our rescue boat, Concord Township Fire Department was also requested to provide a second boat to operate downstream as a safety unit.

Baugo's ambulance repositioned to the opposite side of the river to assist with the patients. Meanwhile, the crew aboard Baugo's rescue boat assisted Cleveland Township crews with moving a patient up the riverbank and to the waiting ambulances.

A total of six patients were evaluated during the incident. Three patients were transported to local hospitals, while three additional patients were treated and released at the scene.

Once all patients had been transferred to EMS crews, Baugo's boat crew worked with the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office and Indiana Department of Natural Resources to remove boat debris from the navigable channel of the river.

We would like to thank Cleveland Township Fire Department, Concord Township Fire Department, Elkhart City Fire Department, the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office, and Indiana DNR for their assistance during this incident.

This incident remains under investigation by the appropriate authorities.

Yesterday afternoon, Baugo Township Fire Department was dispatched for a report of black smoke coming from a wooded area near Driftwood Dr. and Spruce Ln.

Upon arrival, crews located a large plume of smoke and dismounted the apparatus to investigate. After navigating the winding trails, crews located an abandoned vehicle on fire. Crews then returned to the apparatus and repositioned the trucks to establish better access to the scene.

Due to the challenging access and water supply needs, Wakarusa Fire Department was requested to assist with a tanker and an additional brush truck to help shuttle water to the scene. We would like to thank Wakarusa Fire Department for their assistance!

This incident also presented a unique learning opportunity. Two members were returning from fire investigator school when the call came in, allowing them to apply what they had learned in a real-world environment. With the guidance of a senior investigator, these members had the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience that can be difficult to replicate in a classroom setting.

At Baugo Township Fire Department, every call is an opportunity to learn, improve, and better serve our community.

Vehicle Fire Upgraded to Structure Fire

This morning, Baugo Township Fire Department was dispatched for a reported vehicle fire. The incident was upgraded to a structure fire after reports indicated the vehicle was inside the building.

Due to conflicting reports from callers located on both the countryside and city sides of the area, both Baugo Township Fire Department and Elkhart City Fire Department dispatched a full response.

Prior to the arrival of fire crews, a Harrison Township firefighter who was working across the street noticed the fire and immediately deployed fire extinguishers, helping to slow the spread of the fire.

Baugo Medic 122, which was clearing another call at the time, arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire with extension into the building.

Elkhart City Engine 3 arrived and deployed an attack line into the structure. Ladder 191 arrived shortly after and assisted with ventilation. Engine 141, staffed by off-duty Baugo firefighters, responded and established nursing operations.

Thanks to the quick actions of the Harrison Township firefighter and the rapid response of both departments, the fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes. With the fire quickly contained, Elkhart City was able to cancel additional responding resources, keeping them available for other emergencies. Baugo Township was also able to scale back its response.

All employees inside the building at the time of the fire were able to safely evacuate. No injuries were reported.

Baugo Township Fire Department would like to thank our mutual-aid partners for their assistance and willingness to respond:

• Concord Township Fire Department
• Cleveland Township Fire Department
• Harrison Township Fire Department
• Penn Township Fire Department
• Wakarusa Fire and EMS

We appreciate the continued partnership and support from our neighboring departments.

Smoke Investigation leads to discovery of Vehicle Fire.

This morning during shift change, Baugo Township Fire Department was 911 dispatched for a smoke investigation near Spruce Street and Driftwood Avenue.

The off-going crew quickly grabbed their gear back up and responded with Engine 141, while the on-duty crew responded with Ladder 191.

Upon arriving in the area, crews observed thick smoke coming from the woods. Crews repositioned and entered the wooded area to investigate. Crews located a vehicle fully involved. Engine 141 deployed an attack line while 191 brought in another hose pack. The many hands making quick work extinguished the vehicle fire without issue and ensured the area was safe.

The scene was subsequently turned over to law enforcement for further investigation to locate the owner.

During this incident, another member of the off going shift stayed behind in case there were any additional calls.

Vehicle Collision – SR 19 & US 20 Bypass

This afternoon, Baugo Township Fire Department was dispatched to the area of SR 19 and the US 20 Bypass for a multi-vehicle collision.

Upon arrival, crews identified two individuals who required evaluation as a result of the crash.

Due to the collision, southbound and northbound SR 19 as well as the Bypass off-ramp were temporarily closed while crews worked on scene. Firefighters also mitigated oil and other vehicle fluids released during the crash and cleared debris scattered across three lanes of travel.

Once the scene was stabilized and roadway hazards were addressed, the incident was turned over to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office for further investigation.

Please use caution when traveling through the area while the crash has been cleaned up. Remnants of oils may remain making the road slick in spots.
