Welcome to the Elko County Fire Protection District. The Elko County Fire Protection District (District) was established in Elko County in 1956 by an act of the County Commissioners pursuant to Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 473. Management of the Elko County Fire Protection District has been provided by Nevada Division of Forestry since it's inception and will continue until January 1, 2015 when the County will resume management pursuant to Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 474. The district is responsible for providing all risk emergency services with a combination of paid and volunteer staff throughout all unincorporated portions of Elko County. The County is the 4th largest County in the Continental U.S. The elevation ranges from 4300 feet on the edge of the Salt Flats to 11,387 feet at the Ruby Mountains. The Fire Protection District consists of 16 Volunteer Fire Departments with approximately 130 Volunteers, 1 twenty-four hour staffed station, 21 VFD stations with about 70 pieces of apparatus, and supporting administrative staff. We are very proud of our career and Volunteer personnel who have committed themselves to providing protection of life, property and resources to the citizens and visitors of Elko County.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING – ELKO COUNTY 🚩

OUTDOOR BURNING CLOSED FRIDAY & SATURDAY
October 9–10, 2026

The National Weather Service in Elko has issued a Red Flag Warning for Friday, with a Fire Weather Watch remaining in effect Saturday.

Strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation will create conditions for rapid wildfire spread.

🔥 All outdoor burning is prohibited Friday and Saturday, including burning under an approved burn permit.

🏕️ HUNTING & OUTDOOR RECREATION SAFETY

With hunting season underway, please use extra caution while enjoying the outdoors.

* Avoid campfires and open flames.
* Keep vehicles and ATVs off dry grass.
* Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks.
* Carry a fire extinguisher, shovel, and water.
* Report smoke or fires immediately to 911.

We are not out of fire season yet! Cooler mornings don’t eliminate the fire danger.

Outdoor burning restrictions will be reevaluated Sunday, October 11, based on weather conditions.

Stay safe, enjoy the outdoors, and help prevent wildfires!

🚨 OUTDOOR BURNING CLOSURE – ELKO COUNTY 🚨

Friday, October 9 – Saturday, October 10, 2026

Elko County Fire Protection District will close all outdoor burning on Friday and Saturday due to forecasted critical fire weather conditions.

The National Weather Service in Elko has issued a Fire Weather Watch for portions of northern Nevada, with strong, gusty winds and increased fire danger expected heading into the weekend.

Although we have experienced cooler mornings and shorter days, vegetation remains dry and capable of carrying fire. Strong winds can cause a small fire to spread rapidly.

🔥 All outdoor burning is prohibited Friday and Saturday, including burning under an approved burn permit.

Sunday, October 11: We will reevaluate conditions and determine whether outdoor burning can resume. Reopening is not guaranteed and will depend on weather and fire danger.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping prevent unnecessary wildland fires and keeping emergency resources available.

🔥 OPEN BURNING UPDATE — TENTATIVE REOPENING OCTOBER 3, 2026

With shorter days, cooler temperatures, and increased overnight humidity, Elko County Fire is tentatively planning to reopen open burning beginning Saturday, October 3, 2026.

A valid burn permit is required for open burning. Before burning, please renew or obtain your permit at:

https://elkocountynv.firepermits.com

You must activate your permit each day you burn.

Burning without the required permit, burning when burning is closed, or failing to follow permit requirements may result in fines or other legal penalties. If an illegal or unattended burn escapes, the responsible party may also be held liable for fire suppression costs and damages.

⚠️ Fire season isn’t over yet.

There is still potential for significant fire activity. Elko County Fire will continue monitoring weather and fuel conditions, and burning may be closed on individual days due to wind, low humidity, Red Flag conditions, or other elevated fire danger.

Before you burn, check the burn permit system to make sure burning is allowed that day, have water and tools available, and never leave your fire unattended.

When in doubt, don’t burn.
