Just a few spots left!

Next week, in collaboration with Roots Up, the TAY Project is offering a practice-focused training on the Hearing Voices Approach, exploring ways to listen, respond, and provide support that honor people’s own understandings of voice hearing and other related experiences.

This Training Offers Opportunities To:
➡️ Learn about the values and foundational beliefs of the Hearing Voices Movement
➡️ Explore strategies for supporting people who hear voices, including examples of how they can be used
➡️ Practice responding to and providing support for people who hear voices and have related experiences

Space is limited, so register here: https://www.onourownmd.org/s/campaign/701PK00000yXAm1YAG/the-hearing-voices-approach

These are members of our community, people who’ve shared their recovery stories with us over the years, in their own words, in their own time.

On National Peer Support Day, we’re sharing some of those moments again, because this is what peer support looks like: someone who’s been there, telling you that you’re not alone.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted us with your story. 🧡

EVERY VOICE HAS VALUE đź’¬

Every experience is different. Every perspective has value. Every voice deserves to be heard.

Our lived experiences shape what we know, how we understand the world, and what meaningful change can look like.

This World Mental Health Day 2026, we are beginning with a simple but powerful message: everyone has something valuable to contribute.

When we listen with openness and respect—especially to people with lived experience of mental health challenges—we can build greater understanding, challenge stigma, and create services and communities that respond to people’s real needs.

Let us make space for every voice.
Let us listen.
Let us turn real voices into real change.

Today is World Mental Health Day! 🌍

Mental health knows no borders, and honoring this day means recognizing that every individual, regardless of where they live, deserves autonomy, dignity, equity, and access to supportive, person-centered care.

While OOOMD’s work centers on empowering peers right here across Maryland, we know that local advocacy is deeply connected to global conversations around behavioral health and human rights.

Want to explore how communities around the globe are approaching mental health advocacy? Our mid-October digital newsletter will feature a special deep dive into international perspectives for World Mental Health Day!

Location shouldn't dictate your ability to get mental health or recovery support. Yet today, 50% of rural Marylanders live in mental health shortage areas, facing steep geographic and financial barriers when seeking local care.

Behind those missing services is a critical workforce shortage: state assessments show Maryland will need nearly 8,000 new social and human services assistants, including peer recovery specialists, to meet growing community needs.

While thousands of passionate peers with lived experience are ready to answer the call, the path to becoming a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist comes with steep out-of-pocket costs and training gaps that hold many back.

That’s why On Our Own of Maryland is fighting back with our Peer Certification Pathways project.

Funded to break down these exact financial and systemic bottlenecks, this 12-month program provides 40 peer professionals with a completely virtual, fully funded pathway to earn all 50+ required CEUs for CPRS certification, including Intentional Peer Support (IPS) Core, WRAP® 1, and ethics capstones.

By removing financial barriers for uncertified peers in high-impact roles, we are equipping grassroots workers to bring trauma-informed, sustainable support directly into Maryland’s most underserved communities.

Our Fall Cohort for Recovery House staff is officially underway! Are you working in Crisis Outreach? Check the comments to see how you can join our upcoming Spring Cohort.

"Peers don’t just belong in peer support; we belong everywhere change is happening." 💥

For this , we’re looking back at a powerful plenary session from Brendan Welsh, Division Director of Prevention and Promotion at the Behavioral Health Administration.

Drawing from his own 14-year personal recovery journey, Brendan delivered a moving presentation on Leadership Through Recovery. He reminded us that recovery extends far beyond abstinence—it is about rebuilding, reclaiming a life worth living, and taking things one step at a time.

By openly sharing his own experiences with imposter syndrome and the path to stability, Brendan highlighted the contagious power of leading by example, showing up, doing the work, and lifting others as we rise.

What an incredible evening connecting with the next generation of peer leaders at Young Adult Peers, Pics, & Professional Growth! 📸

We had a fantastic time hosting young adults for an evening packed with networking, CPRS career development, free professional headshots, and an interactive improv workshop. Through verbal, physical, and emotional exercises, participants gained practical tools to connect with their thoughts and build confidence in expressing their voices during times of stress and uncertainty.

A massive thank you to the wonderful staff at the Langston Hughes Community, Business, and Resource Center for hosting us, making the event such a success, and even jumping right in to join us for the improv activities!

✨ Excited about launching your own career in peer support? Keep an eye out for upcoming young adult peer events and CPRS opportunities with OOOMD!

If you're a young adult (18-29) who's curious about mental health advocacy, peer support, and/or recovery, reach out to [email protected] or send us a DM/comment!

When it comes to navigating mental health or substance use challenges, the key to staying the course of recovery is knowing someone who has walked in your shoes.

Research shows that individuals who engage with Certified Peer Recovery Specialists (CPRS) are twice as likely to stay enrolled in their treatment programs compared to those going through traditional clinical pathways alone.

Why does peer support make such a massive difference?
🤝 Peers break down isolation because they’ve been there, and they can build trust where clinicians sometimes can't.
🌱 From navigating complex health systems to developing daily coping tools, peers share resources and strategies to solve real-world obstacles.
✨ Seeing a peer in sustainable recovery offers proof that long-term recovery is truly possible.

At On Our Own of Maryland, we are committed to strengthening the peer workforce that makes this level of care possible. Whether you're working toward certification or maintaining your credentials, continuing education keeps our peer community equipped and thriving.

🎓 Looking to earn CPRS Continuing Education Units (CEUs)? We offer free, MABPCB-approved virtual workshops and trainings.
