Have you ever heard of what3words? This FREE app could be a valuable tool during an emergency, especially in rural areas!
🌎 WHAT IS WHAT3WORDS?
What3words divides the entire world into small 10-foot by 10-foot squares. Each square has a unique combination of three words that identifies its exact location.
📱 WHEN COULD IT BE USEFUL?
🌲 Lost while hiking, hunting, or exploring wooded areas.
🚗 Vehicle accidents on rural roads without nearby landmarks.
🚜 Emergencies in fields, farms, or remote locations.
🏕️ Camping, fishing, and outdoor recreation.
🚒 Search and rescue operations where an exact location is difficult to describe.
🏠 Identifying specific locations on large properties or at public events.
📍 HOW DOES IT WORK?
1️⃣ Download the FREE what3words app.
2️⃣ Open the app and allow access to your location.
3️⃣ The app will display three unique words identifying your location.
4️⃣ During an emergency, share those three words with a 911 dispatcher or emergency responders if they can use them.
🚨 IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER!
Always CALL 911 FIRST! What3words is an additional tool to help identify your location, not a replacement for calling 911. Not all emergency dispatch centers support the system.
The app can also work without cell service if the necessary map data is downloaded in advance and your phone can receive a GPS signal.
