The Hancock County Sheriff's Office maintains this page to share updates and encourage discussion on issues affecting our community. For several years, our policy has prohibited comments that are considered “off-topic,” meaning not related to the original post. A federal judge has determined that such a rule would need to be applied so consistently that it would create an unreasonable administrative burden. As a result, the Sheriff's Office has reevaluated its comments policy and determined that the best approach is one that supports robust public conversation. Therefore, with the exception of a few narrow categories of speech recognized by the Supreme Court as unprotected, we will no longer remove comments. Moving forward, only the following types of comments will be removed: hate speech, “fighting words,” incitement of violence, “true threats,” defamation, fraud, speech integral to criminal conduct, obscenity, and child po*******hy. If you believe a comment falls into one of these categories, please contact the Sheriff's Office to let us know.

Lamoine’s Newest Junior Sheriffs! ⭐️

Lieutenant Brian Archer, a.k.a. “Mr. Buddy,” as the kids called him, had the opportunity to spend some time with Miss Amanda’s kindergarten class at Lamoine Consolidated School!

Mr. Buddy started his visit in the “hot seat” around the campfire … literally, a campfire carpet, answering some very thoughtful (and entertaining!) questions from the students about being a law enforcement officer. He also did a little show-and-tell with some of the equipment he carries on his vest and duty belt, and even passed around a set of handcuffs for the kids to check out.

Miss Amanda provided Junior Sheriff certificates and badges, which Lt. Archer handed out to the students, officially making them some of Hancock County’s newest Junior Sheriffs! ⭐️ The kids returned the favor by making Lt. Archer some pretty cool Sheriff badges of his own, along with some very cute thank-you cards for him to take home.

The class then headed outside for a tour of Lt. Archer’s patrol vehicle, where the kids got to check out some of the equipment inside and learn a little more about what deputies use every day. Naturally, no kindergarten visit would be complete without spending some time playing on the playground!

The morning ended in probably the best way possible — with a big group hug from the entire class. 💚

A huge thank you to Miss Amanda and her kindergarten class at Lamoine Consolidated School for inviting Mr. Buddy to spend the morning with them. Between the questions, handmade badges, thank-you cards, playground time and that group hug, we’re pretty sure Mr. Buddy had every bit as much fun as the kids did!

Underage Drinking Enforcement

Over the weekend, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting enforcement details targeting underage drinking at various times throughout the day and in multiple communities across the county.

These enforcement efforts are funded by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and administered by Dirigo Safety LLC.

As a reminder, it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to possess or consume alcohol in Maine.

We encourage parents, guardians, and members of our communities to talk with young people about the risks and consequences associated with underage drinking and impaired driving.

Please enjoy the weekend responsibly and help us keep our communities safe.

Five years.

Five years ago today, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office suffered a loss that forever changed our agency.

On September 23, 2021, Deputy Luke Gross made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the people of Hancock County.

For those of us who knew Luke, remembering him means remembering much more than the badge he wore. We remember his personality, his laugh, his kindness, his love for his family, and the way he could connect with just about anyone—especially kids. We remember a friend and coworker who genuinely cared about the people he served.

Five years is a significant amount of time. People come and go, circumstances change, and life continues moving forward. But there are some people whose impact doesn’t disappear with the passing of time.

Luke is one of those people.

His photograph still hangs in our office. His memorial is passed by our deputies every day. His name is carried on a stretch of Route 3 through Trenton. And, most importantly, his memory continues through his family, his friends, the people whose lives he touched, and the men and women who continue the work he cared so deeply about.

Early this morning, members of our agency gathered near the place where Luke’s watch ended five years ago. It was a simple opportunity to stand together, remember our friend, and make sure that as the years continue to pass, we never allow his service or sacrifice to become simply a date on the calendar.

Luke, you are still missed. You are still talked about. And you are still very much a part of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
