The Will County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning over a new phone scam! We did have a citizen come to the Elwood Police Department who almost became a victim of this scam!
REMEMBER: No matter how convincing the phone call seems, government entities will never request money over the phone OR request money be sent via Cash App, Zelle, or Venmo!
If something seems suspicious call 911 or visit the Elwood Police Department!

A current phone scam has been targeting families with relatives incarcerated in the Will County Sheriff’s Adult Detention Facility.
THE SCAM: A scammer, posing as a member of the Will County Sheriff's Office, calls a relative of someone who is currently in jail and says the inmate can be let out IF the relative posts bond over the phone, sometimes asking the amount of $1,500.
WHY IT’S FAKE: Only a judge can make the decision to release someone from jail, not a member of the Will County Sheriff’s Office.
The Will County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER ask for funds over the phone like this.
If you believe you’ve been scammed or have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Will County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 815-727-8575.
Let’s stay alert and keep our community safe from fraud! 💙
