October’s America 250-Ohio theme, Food & Agriculture, also offers a chance to look at the familiar foods and restaurants that have become part of everyday life in Lorain County.

In 1960, McDonald’s opened its first Lorain County location on West Erie Avenue in Lorain, marking the beginning of a local history with one of America’s most recognizable restaurant brands. A second location followed in North Ridgeville in 1962, as the restaurant began becoming a familiar part of communities across the County.

From local farms and harvests to the restaurants and food traditions enjoyed by generations of residents, food has long been part of Lorain County’s story.

October’s America 250-Ohio theme, Food & Agriculture, is also a chance to recognize the local markets and family-owned businesses that have helped put food on Lorain County tables for generations.

For more than 100 years, Fligner's Market has been a staple of the Lorain community, serving generations of families from its location in Downtown Lorain.

The market is famous for its massive, custom-cut, full-service meat counter (widely recognized as one of the largest and longest in Ohio and the United States) along with fresh produce, seafood, baked goods and specialty foods from Northeast Ohio and around the world.

Its century-long history is a reminder of the important role local markets play in connecting food, tradition and community.

October’s America 250-Ohio theme, Food & Agriculture, is a great opportunity to celebrate Lorain County’s rich agricultural traditions and the local foods and products that have helped shape our communities.

One of those traditions is winemaking, with Lorain County’s grape-growing history dating back more than 140 years. The unique microclimate along Lake Erie helped create ideal conditions for growing grapes, with vineyards becoming an important part of the local agricultural landscape in the late 1800s.

Today, that tradition continues through local vineyards, wineries and the annual harvest, connecting Lorain County’s agricultural past with the food and drink enjoyed by residents and visitors today.
