Friday Night Lights!

Members of the Emerson Fire Department were in the stands last night cheering on our Emerson/Cresskill High School football team, marching band, and cheerleaders. It wasn't the result we wanted, but it was a great night to support our community's young athletes.

A special shout out to Junior Firefighter Sean Zimmerman, who played in the game! We are proud of you, Sean.

When our community needs support, you can always count on us.

If interested in joining the department to help your community and join us for events like this, come to the firehouse anytime the garage doors are open or on Monday nights at 7:30pm. Hope to see you there!

With the nor’ easter expected to hit, here are some procedures that you can follow to stay safe.

• Charge cell phones and other important devices. Keep flashlights and extra batteries available, and avoid using candles whenever possible.
• Bring in or secure loose outdoor items such as furniture, umbrellas, grills, and other objects that could be blown or moved.
• Stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines. Treat every fallen wire as if it is energized. Call 911 if there is an immediate emergency and contact PSE&G at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).
• Never drive or walk through flooded areas. Floodwater may conceal downed power lines, debris, or displaced and raised manhole covers. Turn around and use a different route.
• Never use a generator inside a home, garage, or other enclosed area because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
• If you detect the smell of gas, leave the area immediately. Move at least 350 feet away, then immediately contact 911, then PSE&G at 1-800-880-PSEG (7734)

Stay safe throughout the weekend and try to stay indoors and off the roads.

This morning, September 13th, the Borough of Emerson was hit hard by a storm cell that brought flash flooding throughout town. The Emerson Fire Department responded to multiple incidents, including vehicles trapped in water, flooded roadways, and electrical emergencies. Our crews worked tirelessly to reach every person in need.

Thank you to the Emerson Police Department and Emerson DPW for their assistance and partnership during today's calls.

Please, never drive through flood waters. Listen to weather alerts and take flash flood warnings seriously. Water can rise in minutes, and it does not take much to sweep a vehicle away. Are you prepared if it happens to you? If you ever find yourself caught, know this: we will be there to help.

Stay safe, Emerson.

On September 11, 2026, members of the Emerson Fire Department, Emerson Police Department, Mayor and Council, and our community came together to remember the 2,997 innocent lives lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Firefighter James McDermott served as Master of Ceremonies and shared his own emotional account of that day, a story that moved everyone in attendance. If you were not lucky enough to hear it in person today, Jim's full remarks are included in the images below.

In recent years attendance at this memorial has dwindled. This year, on the 25th anniversary, we were proud to see so many Emersonians join together in a somber and meaningful gathering. We do this to ensure we never forget the darkness of that day, and to honor the light shown by so many in the hours, days, and years that followed.

The Emerson Fire Department will always remember all who helped and all who gave the ultimate sacrifice, whether firefighter, police officer, EMT, or a civilian who simply did the right thing when it mattered most.

We remember you all. We will never forget.

Yesterday, members of the Emerson Fire Department hosted our annual end of summer family and friends BBQ. It was a great day filled with good food, great company, and a friendly kickball game that brought everyone together.

Events like this are a reminder of what makes the EFD special: not just the calls we answer, but the community we build along the way.

Interested in joining the fire department? Stop by any Monday night at 7:30 PM to learn more about becoming a member.

Despite the overcast skies, our members were hard at work tonight during monthly drill, training on hose line advancement under varying pressures and techniques. A driver in training also put in solid reps on pump operations and pressure management.

A special shoutout to our cadets, who worked their first drill night advancing lines, backing up the nozzleman, and picking up a variety of hose line techniques. Great start!

Think you have what it takes? Stop by any Monday night at 7:30 PM to learn more about serving your community.

Continuing Education in Action

Today, Emerson Fire Department was proud to host Capt. Micah Rains of the Greenville City Fire Department for an impactful training session on Detailed Leadership and Aggressive Tactics.
Capt. Rains shared his expertise with members of our department and our mutual aid partners — a great reminder that the best firefighters never stop learning.

Stronger together. Always training. Always ready.
