"We're trying to answer this question in the classroom: Can every child read? And I think the question that librarians are trying to address is: Does every child want to read?" says Tom Bober, school librarian.

Here's a look at how school librarians at Missouri's Clayton school district bring a culture of reading to all students.

Today's A Mighty Girl Community Pick is in honor of Banned Books Week: ā€œAre You There, God? It’s Me, Margaretā€ by Judy Blume. This week, we’re featuring books that have been challenged or banned including this modern classic in which 12-year-old Margaret is struggling with her identity. She’s the child of both Jewish and Christian parents, her body is starting to mature (although perhaps not quickly enough from her perspective), and her friendships are evolving -- and not always in positive ways. Throughout all the turmoil, Margaret’s quiet conversations with God help support her and safely explore who she is and who she wants to be.

ā€œMargaretā€ was one of Judy Blume’s first big hits and generations of women remember identifying with the character as they encountered their own struggles with puberty and changing relationships. But Blume’s references to menstruation, puberty, and sexuality, as well as her depiction of a faith that requires no religious official, rapidly resulted in ā€œMargaretā€ being a frequent target for challenges and bans. Blume says that her writing at the time ā€œwas not courage. It was naivete. I had absolutely no idea I was writing a controversial book.ā€

As a result of her experiences, Blume became a champion for children’s freedom to read without being censored -- and her refusal to ā€œtone downā€ her books to make them less controversial made her the second most challenged author in the US during her prime writing years.

ā€œAre You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret," recommended for ages 9 and up, is available at https://www.amightygirl.com/are-you-there-god
