Halloween Safety Reminder

When driving in residential areas during trick-or-treating, please use extra caution. If parked along the street, consider switching from headlights to parking lights to avoid blinding oncoming drivers.
Parents and guardians should es**rt younger children and remind them to:
• Use caution when crossing streets.
• Never run into traffic from behind or in front of parked vehicles.
• Cross at marked crosswalks or intersections whenever available.

With it getting dark earlier, pedestrians, runners, and cyclists should wear light-colored or retro-reflective clothing. Carry or wear a flashlight or flashing light when traveling in low-light or dark conditions.

A little extra care can help make Halloween safe and enjoyable for everyone.

If you are taking out young trick-or-treaters this Halloween, remember the following Safety tips from the American Safety Council:

• Stay in Groups
• Costumes should be well-fitting and flame-resistant
• Always test makeup
• Remember to look both ways when crossing streets
• Examine all treats before eating
• Stay on sidewalks when possible
• Avoid all dark houses
• Flashlights + glowsticks for visibility
• Enjoy with caution!

Some additional tips:

• Most children under the age of 12 still need adult supervision. However, if kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, please remind them to stay in familiar areas that are well-lit and to stay in groups.
• The most popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., so be especially alert during that time. If you are out driving on Halloween, please slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Additionally, please take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians, and on curbs, as well as being extra cautious when entering and exiting driveways and alleys.
