Our Hearts Are With Wichita and Sedgwick County

The Kansas Region V EMS Council extends our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to everyone impacted by the tragic events at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

Our hearts are with the families who have lost loved ones, those who were injured, and everyone whose lives have been forever changed by this unimaginable tragedy.

We also stand alongside our brothers and sisters in EMS, fire, law enforcement, emergency communications, and the healthcare professionals who responded to this heartbreaking incident. We recognize the tremendous emotional and physical toll that incidents of this magnitude can have on first responders, and we want you to know that you are not alone.

As a regional EMS community, we stand ready to offer whatever assistance, resources, or support we can provide to our partners in Wichita and Sedgwick County in the difficult days ahead.

IMPORTANT REQUEST FROM WICHITA POLICE:

If you were present at the Stryker Sports Complex during the incident and captured any photographs or videos, please visit the Wichita Police Department’s official social media pages for information and a link to submit your footage directly to investigators.

No matter how insignificant you may believe your footage to be, it could contain valuable information that assists with the ongoing investigation.

During this difficult time, we ask everyone to continue keeping the victims, their families, the Wichita community, and all responding personnel in your thoughts and prayers.

To our partners in Sedgwick County: Region V stands with you. Kansas EMS stands with you.

A huge kudos to Sedgwick County EMS for their work during today’s exercise! Their crews coordinated the triage, treatment, and transport of more than 70 simulated patients in a short period of time.

Sedgwick County EMS activated MERGe, giving the Region V EMS Council an opportunity to test our regional mutual aid response plan. Based on agency responses, Region V could have provided 3 BLS ambulances, 19 ALS ambulances, 6 supervisor vehicles, and 1 side-by-side if this had been an actual incident.

Thank you to every agency that responded to our mutual aid request today, including those that were unable to provide resources, and to the agencies that indicated they could assist. Your responses helped us build a realistic picture of regional availability and test how quickly we can coordinate support.

Today’s exercise showed the strength of our regional partnerships and gave us practical ways to improve our next response.

In order to allow Region V services to attend the KSBEMS Legislative update meeting in Salina we will be canceling the Region V meeting on 07-14-2026.

We are proud to share a note of appreciation received from Miami County EMS following the recent tornado response that impacted Hillsdale and surrounding areas.

This incident is a powerful reminder of the strength of coordinated response across Kansas. Through the activation of the Kansas Major Emergency Response Group (MERGe), resources from multiple counties came together quickly to support impacted communities. In total, 19 ambulances, EMS supervisors, and additional support assets were mobilized to assist Franklin, Miami, and Linn counties during a complex and rapidly evolving situation.

This is exactly what regional collaboration looks like—agencies supporting agencies, stepping in when it matters most, and ensuring that no community stands alone during times of crisis.

We want to recognize all responding personnel for their professionalism, adaptability, and commitment to service. Your efforts made a difference.

Thank you to Miami County EMS for the kind words and for their leadership during this incident. We are proud to stand alongside partners across the region and state as part of a system that continues to demonstrate resilience, coordination, and excellence.

Stronger together. Always ready.
