Neighborhood Staples: More Than Just Candy and Food

Celebrating over 60 years of Leucadia Liquor

Over the years, Kamil has witnessed and adapted to changes in Leucadia, forming strong relationships with local families. These bonds are evident daily as customers greet him by name. He fondly recounts a story of a local boy who, upon turning 21, handed Kamil a $20 bill to repay him for candy he had stolen as a child, confessing that the guilt had weighed on him all those years.

As the neighborhood gentrified and beverage trends evolved, Leucadia Liquor’s offerings have adjusted to meet more discerning tastes. Tito’s still dominates the vodka category, and both vodka and tequila brands have exploded in variety. While IPAs remain popular, Mexican-style la**rs are increasingly favored, especially given Leucadia’s beachside location, providing a more refreshing and drinkable option

Authorities in Huntington Beach have shut down a beach after a large great white shark “exhibiting aggressive behavior” was spotted in the water.
Officials with the Huntington Beach Fire Department made the announcement just after 5 p.m. Tuesday, saying the 10-to-12-foot great white was spotted in the water near Lifeguard Tower 16, prompting the beach’s closure from Seapoint Street to the Huntington Beach Pier until Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Surfers in California Are Developing Puzzling Growths on Their Stomachs
Surfers who spend years paddling out to catch the perfect wave are developing strange growths on their upper abdomens.
Researchers have identified a condition they’re calling “liposurfomas,” according to a case report published in JAAD Case Reports. For the study, researchers examined seven male surfers, ages 41 to 55, who developed the unusual masses after years of surfing.
The lumps were caused by “repetitive contact with the surfboard while prone paddling,” according to researchers, referring to the way surfers lie on their stomach and paddle away from the shoreline to catch a wave. The lumps are not cancerous; they’re fibrolipomas, a rare type of benign growth made up of fat and fibrous tissue, per Cleveland Clinic. Researchers note that the “liposurfomas do not appear to cause complications beyond soreness.”

Preliminary total rainfall forecasted by the National Weather Service office in San Diego showed some areas along the coast could see up to an inch of rain between 5 p.m. Saturday through 5 a.m. next Tuesday.
Places in the mountains and inland valleys such as Julian, Palomar and Alpine could see up to an inch and a half of rain, according to NWS.
A coastal flood advisory remains in effect for San Diego coastal communities until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, with possible flooding expected in beach parking lots, boardwalks and roads. Elevated surf will lead to strong rip currents and dangerous swimming conditions, NWS warned
