A message from the City of Encinitas about immigration enforcement:

We recognize that the ongoing immigration enforcement activities occurring in Encinitas have created fear and uncertainty among our community. Publicly available, timely, and accurate information, within the confines of the law, is critical to identifying and correcting misinformation, reducing fear in the community, and maintaining law and order. The City has taken several steps to seek and publish accurate information, communicate with regional and federal officials, and keep our community informed.

• In cooperation with Congressman Mike Levin and most North County mayors, we held several meetings with immigration authorities. At these meetings were leadership from multiple immigration enforcement agencies: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)- Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), ICE- Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Staff continues to meet with Congressman Levin’s staff and the various Federal immigration enforcement agencies.
• The City added immigration information to its website, which includes Know Your Rights, official statements from federal agencies, and a spreadsheet of tracking enforcement activities in the city and actions taken by staff.
• We have also submitted multiple Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Although Federal agencies have not responded, we will continue seeking information, advocating for greater transparency, and sharing verified updates with our community on our website as they become available.

City officials are frustrated due to the agencies’ mixed adherence to fulfilling information requests. We continue to seek full disclosure of ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection activities within the City of Encinitas. These ongoing requests are being made in unison with Congressman Levin and the other North County Mayors. We will continue to engage with all the parties involved in these enforcement actions, our federal representatives, other cities in the county, and the community.
