20 hives. 2 bee suits.

Mark trained 25 CHEC members in Soklo to be hive managers. Two members suited up first: veil, red gloves, rubber boots. Mark adjusted the veil before anyone went near a hive.

Two suits for 20 hives sounds tight. The hives won’t all need inspecting on the same day, and they won’t all be harvested together, so the suits get shared.

A beehive goes up a tree, hand over hand.
One man climbs while two lift the hive up to him, and GHC's Mark Orondo points the way from the ground.

The rest of the CHEC members watch.

It takes a crew to hang a hive. Soklo has 20 to hang.

The cassava field is cleared and fenced. After 3 to 4 dry months, light rain has started, but not enough to plant. So the CHEC started something else.

No apiary to build. The trees hold the hives.

Soklo is about 125 households on Mfangano Island. Cassava goes in when the rain is enough.

Threshing day in Nyamecheo. Seven members, one big pile of dry bean plants, and sticks to beat the pods open.

They planted these beans 4 months ago. Now they'll sell them around the village.

Seven small plots of leased land in Kisii. Nyasumi members are w**ding one of them by hand. The napier grass is in the ground and the hoes are out. The group will sell it.
Invest in Her seed capital got them started.

Look at the combs. When they turn red, laying is close.

Kimuka CHEC's 500 kienyeji birds have been in this coop since June 17, and they've filled every corner of it. The first eggs should come before the end of October.

Eggs go to market first. When laying slows, the birds sell for meat, and that money restocks the flock.

Nyamecheo's power saw is cutting its first trees.

Two weeks ago we showed you the saw still in its box. Last week the group bought its first trees, paying with the last KES 16,000 of its seed capital plus money from its own table bank.

An experienced operator runs the saw while members clear the branches and learn the machine. The trees become timber logs, offcuts and firewood to sell.

Six acres of rice. Every w**d comes out by hand.

Maugo CHEC's 6 sub-groups each farm one acre. They planted the seedlings by hand in August, and w**ding started last week.

After hours in the mud, they sit down together on the bank.

The rains are back in Kisii, Kenya and Nyasumi's CHEC is planting.

Every tuft of napier grass in this field goes in by hand. It's the group's Invest in Her project: 7 small plots of leased land, worked as one farm.

Once it's growing, the grass sells as livestock fodder.

Every shilling gets written down.

At Maugo CHEC's weekly meeting, members record savings and repayments, then plan the next step for their rice shambas.

The path down the middle splits two groups' acres. Both are a month and a half old, and w**ding started this week.

Turn the sound up. Nyamecheo CHEC just got its power saw.

The group received KES 100,000 in Invest in Her seed capital and spent 84,000 on the saw. The other 16,000 buys their first stock of firewood and a small shed to store it.

A trained operator will run the saw at first while members learn.
