Founded in 1985 with a mission "to perpetuate the legacy of the past and honor the pioneer settlers of the Lemon Bay area.” We always welcome new members.
The Society grew out of a Pioneer Days Celebration on September 4, 1983 honoring Englewood’s first newspaper editor, Josephine Cortes, author of History of Englewood and Pioneer Days founder. In May, 1984 an organizational meeting was held, and by the next Pioneer Days celebration on September 2, 1984, the Society had organized a mullet roast for 150 people! On Tuesday, March 25th at 7pm the Lemon Bay Historical Society invites all to a presentation at the Historic Green Street Church, 510 Indiana Ave. The topic: Indian Mound Park
While there is no question that Sarasota County is an attractive place to call home, archaeological sites like the one at Indian Mound Park prove humans have felt this way for thousands of years! Jutting out from Englewood into Lemon Bay, this picturesque resource provides insight into the daily lives and evolving culture of the region’s early Native American inhabitants.
Join Sarasota County Archaeologist Clay Bush for an exploration of the history of the site at Indian Mound Park, plus how archaeologists identify, interpret, and protect significant coastal sites like it. Admission is free but donations for the upkeep of Englewood’s iconic building will be greatly appreciated.

Our Story
The Society grew out of a Pioneer Days Celebration on September 4, 1983 honoring Englewood’s first newspaper editor, Josephine Cortes, author of History of Englewood and Pioneer Days founder. In May, 1984 an organizational meeting was held, and by the next Pioneer Days celebration on September 2, 1984, the Society had organized a mullet roast for 150 people! The mullet was freshly caught by members of the Platt family and Bill Davis and Bob Cashatt foraged some swamp cabbage, which was cooked using Eula Davis’ (Bill’s mother) famous recipe.
In 1985, the Lemon Bay Historical Society was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization whose mission was “for the specific purposes of perpetuating the legacy of the past [and] honoring the pioneer settlers of the Lemon Bay area.” Bob Cashatt, also an artist, designed the logo for the Society.
We always welcome new members. Membership dues are $20 for a single membership, $35 for a family. Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the month (generally) from September—April. You do not need to be a historian to join, just someone interested in preserving the history of this small town.
