Donna Leon, a former preserve manager at The Escondido Creek Conservancy and current board member of FODR, gave an interesting presentation on turtles today. She talked about their habitat, food and life cycles of turtles and how to identify different types you may encounter. The southwestern pond turtle is the only freshwater turtle native to the southern California coast and is threatened due to habitat loss, predation, and climate change. Turtles are important not only because they eat insects, such as mosquitoes, and help disperse seeds, but they also are health barometers of their environment.

The audience responded well to the talk and asked a lot of questions. What would you like to learn about next?
