Estes Valley Fire Protection District The Estes Valley Fire Protection District continues the tradition of superior fire and safety services established more than a century ago in Estes Park.

The Estes Park Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1907. It remained an all-volunteer organization until 2010, when the first paid fire chief was hired. The establishment of a fire district gained voter approval in 2009 and the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) became the governing body for fire and rescue services on January 1, 2010. Volunteer firefighters and paid district staff proudly continue the tradition of providing superior fire and safety services that was established more than a century ago. The district encompasses 66 square miles including the town of Estes Park, CO. Although Rocky Mountain National Park is outside the district's boundaries, an agreement is in place for EVFPD to provide fire suppression services for structural fires and motor vehicle accident assistance in the park on the east side of the continental divide.

Wildfire resilience starts at home, and it takes a community to make a difference.

Estes Valley Fire and the Estes Valley Watershed Coalition are working together to help homeowners reduce wildfire risk, marking trees for removal within the first 100 feet of homes to create a more ignition-resistant space around homes. After homeowners received free wildfire home assessments and recommendations from Estes Valley Fire, neighbors came together to tackle vegetation management, with EVWC securing grant funding to support the work alongside efforts already underway by the homeowners.

Wildfire Mitigation Works!

During the Devils Gulch Road Fire in Estes Park, wildfire risk reduction efforts helped protect one local home from the flames. Just weeks before the fire, Estes Valley Protection District Wildfire Risk Reduction Education Specialist Logan Lasley completed a home mitigation assessment for a resident in the affected community, and the homeowner followed through on the recommended steps, reducing the fuel around the property. When the fire reached the area, Lasley recalled doing little triage work at that home—the reduced fuel load essentially cut the fire out. In contrast, flames spread rapidly through properties with heavier, unmanaged fuels.
