And we’re not done yet!!! 👏👏👏

Ratko Pavlovic has been named 2026 Oregon Elementary PE Teacher of the Year! He was announced at the Oregon SHAPE (Oregon Society of Health and Physical Educators) conference over the weekend, and we couldn’t be more excited and proud to celebrate him 🎉

Ratko is currently a PE teacher at Danebo Elementary and if you know him, you know what a highlight he is in our schools. He’s passionate about helping every child feel confident, connected, and successful through movement. His goal is for students to experience PE as a place of joy and belonging, while building habits that support lifelong physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Please join us in congratulating Ratko on his achievement. We are so grateful for you, and all that you do for our students. Congratulations!

Today, we honor and celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

It was a beautiful, chilly morning as a small but mighty group of Bethel staff, students, families, community supporters and members of our Bethel Native Parent Committee gathered to place 575 Tribal flags outside the Bethel School District office.

This sweet annual tradition is a meaningful way to honor the history, cultures and ongoing contributions of Indigenous peoples across our country. Each flag represents a federally recognized Native American Tribe.

Throughout the day, students from schools across Bethel will visit the flags and have an opportunity to learn more about Indigenous Peoples’ Day and the Native peoples and cultures represented.

We’ll gather again this evening for a community ceremony celebrating our Native youth, families and communities.

Thank you to everyone who helps make this tradition possible and continues to uplift and support our Indigenous students and families!

Last week, our Sources of Strength peer leaders came together for training, and the energy was incredible!

Sources of Strength is a student-led program that helps students build connections, recognize their strengths, and know where to turn when they need support. Through games, small group conversations, and hands-on resources, these students are learning how to lead this work in our schools.

And Bethel’s work is getting noticed! 🏆 Our Sources of Strength team was named a 2026 Sources of Strength Showcase Team Initiative Award Winner, celebrating the teamwork, innovation, and dedication our students and staff bring to promoting mental health and wellness every day.

Huge thank you to our Sources of Strength team for supporting our student leaders, and to everyone who makes this work possible. Nobody has to face life’s challenges alone. 💛

Spanish class moved to the art room today! 🎨

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Maestra Jessica Zapata’s Spanish students welcomed visiting Puerto Rican artist David Rose Calderin, who guided them through creating their own paintings — completely in Spanish!

From art to dance and other hands-on experiences, Maestra Zapata is always finding ways for students to use Spanish to create, connect and experience culture. Her classes today seemed to love a different approach to Spanish class, too.

Stay tuned for more Hispanic Heritage month celebrations coming up!

We're so lucky to have Officer Trevizo on the Bethel team! Thank you for keeping our schools safe and being such an important part of our community.

A big congrats to Nate Jackson from Willamette High School in Eugene for being named Oregon’s 2026-27 Teacher of the Year!

“Education should challenge students while supporting them,” Jackson wrote in his application. "Ultimately, my goal is not just to teach history, but to help students better understand themselves, each other, and the world they are shaping.”

The Oregon Teacher of the Year program is sponsored by ODE in partnership with the Oregon Lottery, and the winner is selected after an extensive application process.

Nominees from schools throughout Oregon submitted packets of information including testimonials and letters of support from administrators, students, and colleagues. Applicants were assessed on leadership, instructional expertise, community involvement, understanding of educational issues, professional development, and vision.

Director Dr. Charlene Williams said: “Mr. Jackson knows that meaningful learning begins with relationships and that every student deserves to feel seen, valued, and empowered to discover their purpose."

This year, we’re putting a big focus on attendance across Bethel — and we’re starting at Cascade Middle School, where staff began digging into this work last year and have already seen some amazing buy-in from students.

At the heart of Cascade’s approach is a simple message: We want you here.

They’ve paired high expectations with positive reinforcement and a strong focus on belonging. From principals and teachers to counselors, office coordinators, nutrition services, bus drivers and more, students are surrounded by people who notice when they show up, celebrate their successes and help when things get hard.

Because showing up matters. It’s about learning, relationships, belonging and helping every student build a future of their choosing.

We want you here. We want you to succeed. And we want you to know you belong.
