CSS supporters and social media followers-

Please take the time to read the following information about how CSS’s Development Team manages our social media pages for general transparency and to set expectations around follower conduct. In line with CSS’s diversity and inclusion statement, Community Supported Shelters does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, sex, religion, language, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, or political beliefs. If you feel that CSS has fallen short of this promise in any way, please take the time to fill out the appropriate grievance form. CSS’s Development Team will respond to grievances and concerns expressed in our social media comments as our capacity allows. Responses to such comments will include the information above and allow an opportunity for any specific questions to be answered. Facebook defines spamming as “contacting people with unwanted content or requests. This includes sending bulk messages, excessively posting links or images to people's timelines, and sending friend requests to people you don't know personally.” Multiple instances of such behaviors will result in accounts being blocked by a member of the Development Team. CSS values our social media pages as a place to interact with donors and volunteers, share information about our work as an organization, and coordinate donations for those in need. For these essential functions to take place, CSS’s social media pages must remain a safe and respectful space. Thank you for your time and understanding!

Unhoused folks typically feel more invisible than ever during Eugene's annual spring national running event. To make the Eugene Marathon accessible to more people, each year CSS arranges for a group of unhoused clients to participate in the 5K.

Anna, a CSS staff member who has participated alongside clients for the past two years, shares: "It's about more than running--it's an opportunity to belong, connect, and be part of the community they call home."

Fun fact #1: you can sponsor an unhoused individual to participate in the 2027 Eugene Marathon. 🎖️

Fun fact #2: you can raise money for CSS by walking or running on the 2027 CSS Team. 🏃

Alice is an unhoused individual with a defiant disorder, living in Eugene, Oregon, who is no stranger to the criminal justice system.

Judge Greg Gill shares, "We've seen Alice a bunch in our court since 2001. We're talking cases of shoplifting, DUIs, hit and runs, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, thefts, possession of fentanyl, and ultimately a violation of park rules."

But Alice hasn't received any new charges in over a year. What happened?

"Alice said she wanted to participate in the Community Court Program," Judge Gill explains, "and was sheltered immediately through Community Supported Shelters. She overdosed on fentanyl once, and was revived by CSS staff, and then at that point created a bond with CSS, to where she's trusting them." That bond has helped her stabilize and remain sheltered since 2025.

Alice isn't alone. In the program's first year, 0% of unhoused participants received criminal citations while sheltering with CSS. This program is funded by the Community Safety Payroll Tax, which supports the EPD, 911, the city court, Fire and EMS, and homeless services.

Rising costs are affecting us all. For many Americans, one unexpected setback can be enough to trigger a serious financial crisis.

Today is World Homeless Day. 🏠 We’re raising awareness about housing insecurity, a growing challenge for U.S. households. Rising rents and stagnant wages are leading to an increase in eviction, utility shutoffs, frequent moves, and doubling up.

Have you or someone you know ever faced housing insecurity? Share your experience in the comments.

Sustainability Highlight: Did you know that Sustainability is one of our organization's values? Let's talk about our Community Garden Program.

This summer our organization worked with community members to create community gardens. We hosted a garden party at the Roosevelt Community to create Hügelkultur garden beds for our community. This garden technique promotes water conservation and strong root systems. Volunteers came to our community to support our efforts to create community gardens, promote food growth, and sow the seeds of community.

Thanks to volunteers and a grant from the Chambers Family Foundation our summer garden initiative helped our organization promote sustainable gardening, food growth, and beauty across our communities.
