Egan Warming Centers Egan Warming Centers ensure that people have a place to sleep indoors when it is below 30 degrees. St.

The Egan Warming Center is a coalition of community members representing service providers, nonprofits, faith and social activists communities and local government who have come together since 2008 to ensure that homeless people have shelter during extreme cold weather. Named in honor of Major Thomas Egan, a kindly gentleman who froze to death during a cold spell in 2008, the Warming Center mission is simple: to ensure that homeless people in Lane County have a place to sleep indoors when temperatures drop to 28 degrees or below between November 15th and March 31st. Vincent de Paul of Lane County serves as the primary agency responsible for implementing the operation of the Warming Center and building a sustainable model for the long term. Egan will have a Springfield site this year. Our team is working to identify a location for our modular tent shelter system. As the article indicated we are still in need of new volunteer sign-ups. We've worked out the issues with our new site and all sign up links are working again.

Additionally, any support both financially and material donations are greatly appreciated as the winter months approach. Monetary donations can be made online through the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County donation form svdp.us just input Egan as the benefiting program.

Material donations can be brought to Shop St. Vinnie's donation centers and barrels in the stores. Let the attendant know it is for Egan.

Thank you everyone. Let's face this winter together and keep our neighbors safe.

With colder weather on the horizon, preparations are underway for a local network of warming centers. Besides reduced funds, it’s also uncertain if a Springfield site will be available.

St. Vincent de Paul plans to operate three Egan Warming Centers across the Eugene-Springfield metro area. These facilities open up for overnight stays when the outside temperature drops below freezing. Bill Bernard, the organization’s director of operations, told KLCC that over the last year and a half, disruptions at the federal level have essentially halved funding for operations.

“Last year we had record private donations that allowed us to keep operating,” said Bernard. “We had more volunteers, we had to get more creative and buckle down to figure out ways to provide our service at a lower cost. But we made it happen, and St. Vincent de Paul will continue to do that this year.”

Bernard says one concern is whether or not Springfield will have a warming center this year, as some commercial tenants there have raised concerns.

“It’s a challenge sometimes to get people to understand that we’re going to do all we can, we’re gonna keep it clean, we’re gonna be good neighbors,” said Bernard. “Sometimes it’s tough to make the sale.”

If all goes to plan, St. Vincent de Paul will run warming centers at SVdP’s “The Zone” building on Highway 99, the Lane Events Center at the fairgrounds (when available) and the Springfield site at Mohawk and Centennial for the modular warming tent setup.

Bernard says he hopes they can work with the previous Springfield location again, but he welcomes referrals to other potential places in Springfield that are close to LTD bus lines and have gravel lots to accommodate tents.

As for volunteers, Bernard says the current numbers are generally lower than normal for this time of year. “But in fairness it tends to happen later in the season, more a waterfall than a trickle. So I’m not panicking yet.”

Typically the warming centers have 800-1000 volunteers signed on through the winter, “with active participation of 350 to 500 through the season,” said Bernard. He said donations of cold winter clothing such as gender-neutral coats and socks are important.

People are encouraged to volunteer or arrange donation drop-offs at St. Vincent de Paul’s website. Bernard says volunteer positions can be with warming site clients, or behind-the-scenes such as organizing donations or food preparation.

The Egan Warming Centers are named for Thomas Egan, a Korean War veteran who froze to death in the Eugene streets in 2008.

We are in need of new volunteer signups ahead of this year's Egan Warming Centers season! Egan Warming Centers is a vital community program that activates to provide shelter for unhoused neighbors when overnight lows drop below 30 degrees.

Egan volunteers staff the shelters and fill a variety of positions from serving meals, checking in clients, setting up, and cleaning.

Becoming an Egan volunteer is as easy as 1-2-3!

1. Sign up using our online form. You will be entered into our volunteer database and receive updates about upcoming events, activations etc.

2. New volunteers must attend an orientation to help you be successful when stepping into your first volunteer shift.

3. When Egan Warming Centers activate you will be notified and be able sign up for a shift using our online portal!

Signing up and attending an orientation does not mandate you to volunteer for a shift.

Temperatures are starting to cool and soon winter will be upon us. St. Vincent de Paul's Egan Warming Centers program coordinators are working hard to prepare for another season of activations. Egan Warming Centers is the emergency weather program for this community. Activating when temperatures drop below 30 degrees Fahrenheit to provide food and a safe place of refuge for our unhoused community.

Egan Warming Centers relies on volunteers to operate effectively and open as many spaces available. We will begin hosting new volunteer orientations in the coming weeks for those who wish to get involved and become an Egan volunteer.

The Egan Warming Centers season is coming to a close, and we need your help to pack up “The Zone” this Sunday, March 29.

We still have plenty of open volunteer spots for both shifts:
• 10 AM – 1 PM
• 1 PM – 4 PM

This is a great opportunity to lend a hand—no experience needed. You don’t have to be familiar with the site, and kids are welcome too. There will be a mix of tasks like sorting, organizing, cleaning, and moving supplies. Snacks and water will be provided, and the weather is looking pretty great for it.

This work matters. As we pack up for the season, we’re also looking ahead—this space has the potential to support our unhoused neighbors year-round, and your help makes that possible.

Join us at The Zone (530 Hwy 99 N, just north of Roosevelt) and be part of wrapping up another impactful Egan season alongside an incredible community of volunteers.

❄️ EGAN UPDATE & VOLUNTEER NEED ❄️

First — thank you to everyone who volunteered last week so that all Egan sites could be open for our guests. Because of you, our unhoused neighbors had a warm and safe place to stay.

A special thank you to the volunteers from Unitarian Universalist Church who came to Valley Covenant Church to help with morning clean-up. That spirit of teamwork is what makes Egan possible.

Egan is completely dependent on volunteers to provide that warm, safe space. 💙 Thank you for making it happen.

Second — ⚠️ We still have many open volunteer spots for tonight’s activation.

With some of our regular volunteers out of town, ill, recovering from procedures, or managing other commitments, the responsibility — and opportunity — falls to those who are able and available.

If you can help, even for one shift, please sign up.

Third — 🌡 Egan may also activate Thursday night.

Temperatures are dropping and are currently nearing activation protocol. You can sign up now for Thursday night/Friday morning in case activation is called later today.

Please watch for a notification this afternoon regarding Thursday night.

💙 Our neighbors are counting on us. Thank you for stepping up when it matters most.
