In the wake of today’s heartbreaking tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, our hearts are with the students, families, educators, first responders, and the entire Bend community.

Tomorrow, Eugene Police officers will have an increased presence near local elementary schools as a visible show of support and reassurance for students, parents, and school staff.

We recognize that tragedies like this can leave families and communities feeling shaken. While we cannot take away the pain and uncertainty, we hope our presence provides an added sense of comfort and security as students return to school.

The safety and well-being of our children remain among our highest priorities. We stand in solidarity with the Bend community, the Bend Police Department, and everyone impacted by this devastating event.

Our thoughts are with Silver Rail Elementary School and the Bend community.

Man Arrested for Causing Multi-Car Crash on the I-105 Entrance

An 18-year-old Eugene man was arrested Wednesday for causing a multi-vehicle crash at West 7th Avenue and the I-105 entrance.
At 2:49 p.m. October 14, a Eugene police officer witnessed a traffic crash. The officer was driving on West 7th Avenue when a Dodge Challenger passed him on the right and cut over three lanes of travel quickly without a turn signal to try and squeeze in between a Ford truck and a Chevy Suburban. The Challenger struck both vehicles. The Suburban's driver had three small children in the car, including a baby. A medic was called to check on the mother and baby. No one was transported to the hospital.
The driver of the Challenger, Joshua Alexander James, refused to tell the officer where he was going. His passenger confirmed there was no emergency and they were not in a hurry to get anywhere.
A secondary crash occurred when a driver attempted to swerve out of James' way to avoid being hit.
James was cited In lieu of custody for Reckless Driving.

A property manager discovered two people in a vacant home Wednesday morning on Washington Street.
At 8:27 a.m., Eugene police were called to the 1200 block of Washington Street for a report of two people inside a back bedroom without permission. The couple gathered their belongings and left. The male was barefoot.

19-Year-Old Portland Man with Fake ID Arrested for DUII

Eugene Police arrested a 19-year-old Portland man Monday night after a car crashed on Willamette Street.
At 10:50 p.m. October 12, officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash on Willamette near East 33rd Avenue. Officers arrived and found Roman Litz and three 19-year-old women in and around the car. Grease and fluids were present in the roadway, and the car was damaged on its passenger side.
All of the people present denied driving the car, initially blaming a fifth person who was not present at the scene. Litz repeatedly denied driving and admitted to consuming alcohol.
The females eventually told police that Litz had been driving when the vehicle crashed.
Litz was arrested. His blood alcohol content was measured at .15 percent. He had a fake California ID on him at the time of his arrest. He was lodged at the Lane County Jail on charges of DUII, Reckless Driving and three counts of Reckless Endangering. He was also cited for Minor In Possession of Liquor While Operating a Motor Vehicle. Two bottles of alcohol were located in the center console of the vehicle.
