Lisa left an unsafe living situation this past February and came to the Eugene Mission via the hospital.

After decompressing and realizing she was in a safe space, she began her first steps toward healing.

After months of having regular access to doctors, attending classes and being around what she calls “a great group of women,” Lisa was ready to move on.

She says she moved hand-in-hand with her Navigator Julie, who helped her every step of the way.

She received help from the Senior and Disability Services mobile unit that regularly visits our campus, she received housing assistance, and then she was ready to find her own home.

“When things are right they fall into place,” Lisa shared. “All my energy and motivation came from being safe, being encouraged, and not being complacent.”

She said the environment in the Women’s Center was nurturing in a way that healed her soul.

“We have core things being taken care of and we also have the classes and the time with all the other ladies,” she shared. “It’s really healing to be with a great group of people, and it’s a really smart program.”

When Bryant entered the R3 Program at the Eugene Mission, he was a young man suffering incredible loss, he lacked family support, and he was in a deep depression.

"I was faced with sitting here or pulling my life together and I got motivated," he shared. "Ben (his Navigator) was helping me and he pushed me to get an education."

Bryant earned his GED in a month-and-a-half and is now in the construction technology program at Lane Community College, with a goal of entering the electrician apprenticeship program.

"It came down to looking in the mirror and asking myself the nitty gritty questions," Bryant said. "Is this where I want to end up and blame others and regret a lot in life? It came down to accepting things. If I didn't want to become a product of everything that happened to me, I needed to push on."

Bryant called the R3 Program a "giant motivational tool" where he could see the success of others who were graduating and feeling good about it.

"They told me I could turn my life around here," Bryant said. "The resources you can get here are immense. Ben helped open a lot of doors I thought were closed."

Bryant has now moved into student housing, thanks to financial aid and the STAR program at Lane. He is also being assisted through peer mentors.

Way to go Bryant!!

We'll be meditating on this for a while. ❤️

For 24 straight hours, we livestreamed conversations about homelessness, addiction, mental health and connection from our Eugene Mission campus.

Thousands of people tuned in, our volunteers and staff poured their whole hearts into every single detail of the production, and our community showed up.

So often, conversations around homelessness reflect a loss of hope, but as each hour of the livestream passed, we saw hope and compassion blossom.

O'Hara Catholic School students sang hope into the story from minute 1. Our Life Change guests carried that hope forward with their cardboard testimonies. Countless stories from the Bench spoke of overcoming impossible odds....and emerging stronger.

To every person who showed up and shared their heart, shared the event online, or participated in a million other ways --- we thank you.

Let's keep the momentum going. ❤️

🌻The stage is set...
🌻The tent is up...
🌻and we are READY for tomorrow!!

This Thursday, Oct. 8, beginning at noon, we are heading into 24 hours of livestreamed conversations.

We haven't picked an official flower for Conversations on a Bench, but if we did, it would be the sunflower.

Sunflowers turn their face to the sun and move with its direction...Sunflowers follow the light, and so do we.

We'll be shining a new and hopeful light on the challenge of homelessness, one conversation at a time.
