Correct steps to dispose of batteries
🔋 Used batteries can spark fires when tossed in the trash or recycling.
In collection trucks and waste facilities, batteries have sparked dangerous fires that put people and property at risk.

Here are 3 easy steps to dispose of them safely:
1 Tape the ends. Cover battery terminals with clear, non-conductive tape.
2 Make a plan. Find a certified drop-off site or order a safe return box.
3 Turn them in. Drop them off locally or mail them using a return kit.

It’s simple and makes a big impact that helps keep you, your family, your home, and your community safe.

40 Years!
40 years ago today, Captain Deedon began his career with Springfield Fire and Life Safety! Today Captain Deedon serves Eugene Springfield Fire on Ladder 11 at our Santa Clara station. Station 11 also houses ESF’s Technical Rescue Team (TRT) where Captain Deedon’s Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) experience as a former team member and trainer on Oregon Task Force 2 is an incredible asset to the community.

As an extra we also celebrated his son Engineer Deedon’s 10th anniversary.

40 years and still going strong, join us in appreciating Captain Deedon.

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail. For more info: fpw.org.

ESF responded as part of a county wide mutual aid response to assist JCFD with a mill fire at 29229 Milliron Road.
Battalion 2, Brush 8, Ladder 6, and E7 worked overnight into this morning alongside multiple agencies from Lane and Linn county to contain the fire.
This scene will likely remain active for several days as mop up efforts continue.

At 6:22 AM on Saturday morning (October 10th), ESF responded to a reported structure fire at Coastal Farm & Ranch (2200 W 6th Ave) in Eugene. Multiple callers reported an unknown type fire at the location. Tower 2 from the Whiteaker Station arrived in approximately 4 minutes as part of a first alarm response.

On arrival, Tower 2 located the fire, performed a size-up, assumed Incident Command, and downgraded the response for a large outside fire involving palletized wood shavings. When the fire was knocked down, Coastal Farm staff assisted ESF crews with a forklift to break apart the piles of materials and allowed for overhaul and completion of fire extinguishment.

The ESF fire marshals office and Eugene Police performed the fire investigation as well as traffic control. The fire was contained to the area of origin (palletized wood shavings) in the parking lot, and there were no other injuries reported.

Not a sight you see every day on the ESF drill field. Crews participated in a live fire drill, immediately followed by an extrication drill with air ambulance transport. Thanks Reach Air Medical for joining in!

Shout out to the crew at Firehouse 2 (A shift) that went the extra mile to help.
