The sound of a keyboard is generationally satisfying for the student population of UO’s campus β€” so much so that there are extensions for a laptop to produce the clicks and clacks of a much heavier keyboard. Why does throwing data πŸ“Š at a problem often seem to create a worse one? Are we measuring what actually matters πŸ“, or just what’s easy to count☝️?

If these types of questions intrigue you, consider joining our πŸ“š Data & Society Book Club for a hard look at "metric fixation" -- the dangerous belief that everything can (and should) be quantified.

We'll be reading and discussing Jerry Z. Muller’s "The Tyranny of Metrics" -- an unfiltered inquiry into the very real limits of data-driven decision making. From higher education to healthcare to corporate management, Muller argues that our obsession with performance indicators, dashboards, and standardized data is making our institutions worse.
