NEW U.S. 199 ROUNDABOUT IN ACTION IN DEL NORTE: The new roundabout at Elk Valley Cross Road near Crescent City is now in use. Construction began this spring.

The intersection has a history of collisions, and the new roundabout is designed to slow traffic, reduce serious collisions, and help drivers move through the area more safely and efficiently. New sidewalks, crossings and lighting will also improve safety for people walking and biking.

While the roundabout is now in use, our crews are still working on the Elk Valley Cross Road approaches and sidewalks. Some traffic changes and lane closures remain in place.

We expect the entire project to be complete by late November 2026.

Thanks for your patience as we finish the remaining work! Please slow down and watch for workers.

Crews will start near mile markers 17 and 18 for about four to five weeks, then move to other areas. Work will continue at times through the winter, depending on the weather.

Please drive carefully near crews. You can follow traffic changes through our weekly Road Information Bulletin at tinyurl.com/d1roads.

🔥 Prescribed burns planned this week near Cobb 🔥

The Tribal EcoRestoration Alliance and Lake Cal-TREX partners will conduct ecocultural burns from Wednesday, October 21, through Friday, October 23, in the Loch Lomond and Bonanza Springs areas near Cobb, on the lands of Middletown Rancheria Pomo Indians of California and Big Valley Band of Pomo Indians. Smoke may be visible to residents and travelers along Route 175 and surrounding roads.

The burns aim to support capacity building and provide training in ecocultural fire practices in Lake County, strengthen relationships with local Tribes, improve community resilience, and reduce wildfire fuel.

Burn dates are subject to change or cancellation due to weather or other conditions.

The Lakeport Maintenance and South Tree/Vegetation crews recently completed the clearing of a clogged drainage channel along Route 29 near Jct. Route 175 in Lakeport, Lake County. The project was conducted to ensure that the drainage infrastructure can accommodate sudden, heavy rainfall. Crews removed brush from the ditch and transported it off-site. A temporary dam was installed to retain upstream water during the project and was removed upon completion of the work.

GEOTECHNICAL WORK CONTINUES AT LAST CHANCE GRADE: Crews have been constructing temporary access roads to assist geotechnical investigations for the Last Chance Grade Project along coastal U.S. 101 south of Crescent City in Del Norte County. This work is scheduled to continue through January.

This is not the construction of our planned 6,000-foot tunnel. Crews are drilling and testing below the ground, surveying and doing other fieldwork to gather information engineers need as design work for our permanent tunnel solution continues.

Travelers may encounter short delays or slowdowns. No trail or parking area closures are planned as part of this work, though the Damnation Creek Trailhead is closed through October due to a separate Caltrans project. For our weekly report on possible delays in this area, visit tinyurl.com/d1roads. The map included in the post shows where work may be visible and heard along U.S. 101 and near the California Coastal Trail.

With construction estimated to begin in 2031, the proposed tunnel project would save drivers an eight-hour detour when landslides close the highway and address the threat of future long-term closures for this vital artery.

If you're interested in learning more in person, please join us in Crescent City on October 27 for a public open house focusing on the Last Chance Grade Project. It begins at 6 p.m. at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds. More details: lastchancegrade.com.
