Six Rivers National Forest Lifts Fire Restrictions

With recent precipitation, shorter days, and colder nights the Six Rivers National Forest will be lifting all fire restrictions, effective October 23, 2026. The lifting of these restrictions only applies to national forest lands on the Six Rivers National Forest.

As a result, the following activities are now allowed with No Public Use Restrictions in place:

✅Campfires in wilderness areas
✅Dispersed campfires
✅Personal chainsaw use is allowed at any time, subject to regulations, including a valid permit to cut firewood, which can now be obtained online

Although fire danger has decreased, the lifting of fire restrictions does not mean fire season is over. Potential still exists for wildfires to start. Forest visitors must continue to act responsibly with anything that can start a fire.

Forest Products Week Spotlight: Mushrooms!

Our national forests provide more than timber — they nurture an incredible variety of wild mushrooms. These forest products support wildlife, contribute to local food traditions, and play a key role in keeping ecosystems healthy by breaking down organic material and enriching the soil.

As you explore your forests this season, take a moment to appreciate the small but mighty mushrooms that help keep these landscapes thriving.

Six Rivers National Forest moved its Supervisor’s Office into the Professional Building at 507 F Street in downtown Eureka, in January 1978.

This archival photo captures a familiar downtown landmark and a chapter of our forest’s history.

Fuelwood permits are available year-round through our E-Permits website https://epermits.fs2c.usda.gov/ – quick, easy, and ready whenever you are… and, buying them online gives you a full year to use them from the date of purchase, while those purchased in person expire at the end of the calendar year.

Grab your permit before heading out and enjoy the warmth all winter long.

And just a heads-up: this applies to personal-use firewood. Permits are not required for small amounts you might gather for a campfire while visiting.

Using trees to protect trees? That’s Forest Products at work! We’re working with to use cellulose from trees to insulate fruit from late-season frost and ice as the fruit grows. Not only does it help protect fruit growers from economic losses, the cellulose is non-toxic and washes right off once the danger from the ice is past.

Forest Products Week Spotlight: Wood for Music

From violins and guitars to pianos and flutes, many beloved instruments begin their journey in our forests. Carefully selected wood species provide the strength, resonance, and tonal quality that musicians rely on.

Sustainable forest management helps ensure that these unique wood resources remain available for future generations of artists and makers.

Healthy forests don’t just support ecosystems — they help create the soundtrack of our lives.

What’s your favorite wooden musical instrument? Tell us in the comments.
