On October 10, 2026, the American Library Association is asking everyone to take at least one action to help defend books from censorship and to stand up for the library staff, educators, writers, publishers, and booksellers who make them available!

Censorship is a national problem that happens at the local level. That means elections matter! The right to read — and democracy — depend on us. While you’re taking action on Let Freedom Read Day, don’t forget to prepare for elections big and small in your community.

Learn more about the actions you can take at bannedbooksweek.org/let-freedom-read-day

And don’t forget: Censorship won’t stop just because Banned Books Week does — you can take action any day of the year!

The American Library Association documented 487 attempts to censor books at libraries, schools, and universities in 2025. The reasons most commonly cited for censorship were false claims of illegal obscenity for minors; inclusion of LGBTQIA+ representation; covering topics of race, racism, social justice, and diversity; and presenting political or religious views with which the challengers disagreed. Of the 4,235 unique titles that were challenged or banned in 2025, here are the top 11 most frequently targeted.

Right before Banned Books Week, the American Library Association releases the previous year's statistics on book censorship. The images in this post contain some highlights of the 2025 Censorship by the Numbers.

"A handful of people should not be allowed to dictate what the rest of us can read! Organized groups have used fear and disinformation to silence stories and remove books from our libraries, schools, and bookstores. Why can’t they just let books be?

Books are for everyone. Books should be read. Books should be uncensored. Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read."

It's the start of Banned Books Week! Here's some more information about the week's designation from the American Library Association:

“Banned Books Week is a celebration of the freedom to read and the joy that comes from discovering stories that expand our understanding of ourselves and one another,” said American Library Association President Sam Helmick. “Every person has the right to seek information and choose books without censorship. When we say ‘Let Books Be,’ we’re showing up for readers everywhere and reaffirming that libraries are for everyone.”

Banned Books Week 2026 is an opportunity to inform communities about this escalation in censorship while also highlighting the importance of the right to read and readers’ access to information. October 10, 2026, will be Let Freedom Read Day, a day of direct action against censorship. Together, we can protect the freedom to read during Banned Books Week and throughout the year. Let Books Be.
