FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Prehospital Blood Administration Program Is Now Live In Vanderburgh County
The Vanderburgh County Fire Department (VCFD) is pleased to announce that as of Oct. 1st, 2026 at 1400 hours, weâve made a historic advancement in local emergency medical services, becoming the first fire department in Vanderburgh County and southwest IN to carry prehospital blood products on an ambulance. This critical, life-saving resource is now available for onscene intercept and use across our service area of Scott, Armstrong, and German Townships, as well as the Town of Darmstadt and mutual aid response areas.
Thanks to a vital partnership with the American Red Cross and Ascension St. Vincent Evansville, VCFD's prehospital blood administration program aims to reduce preventable deaths from trauma. Severe bleeding from injury, postpartum hemorrhage, and gastrointestinal bleeding are leading causes of death that can be prevented if treatment begins soon enough. Recent research from the American Red Cross shows that early administration of blood products can be crucial in stopping intractable bleedingâbleeding that is difficult to control via traditional meansâand saving lives.
VCFD, through support from the Indiana Southern Trauma Regional Advisory Council (South TRAC), will initially be carrying packed red blood cells and plasma, supported by cutting-edge technology to facilitate this initiative. Our equipment includes a Delta ICE blood cooler, Belmont blood warming device, and BloodCOMM blood product monitoring to ensure blood product safety. Blood product will be delivered to VCFD by the American Red Cross, and to ensure that we remain good stewards of this lifesaving resource, transferred to Ascension St. Vincent Evansville as units approach their expiration date.
To prepare for this significant step forward in emergency care, crews have dedicated many hours to specialized training over the past few months, with planned ongoing support from our sponsoring hospital, Ascension St. Vincent.
The Vanderburgh County Fire Department is deeply grateful for the support of the American Red Cross Indiana Region, Ascension St. Vincent, and all of our community partners who helped make this prehospital blood program a realityâenabling our EMS professionals to provide this advanced lifesaving care just minutes after an injury occurs.
